Sales Tax Report (Business & Personal Mac)

Hi, so my town has a complicated sales tax structure, with a summer and a winter rate, and a few different exemptions- the ones I use most are for non-local sales and senior citizens. When I file my city taxes, I need to report total sales for each tax period, and exempt sales for each category, and then compute my tax due on the difference. I assigned each exemption category a sales tax of 0% with the city as the agency, the only problem being that because it's 0% it somehow gets shunted into "No Agency" instead of being listed under the city. I could mark them as non-taxable sales, and then they'd show in that column, but I'd have to go back and manually determine which exemption they belonged in. All I really want is a report just like the existing sales tax report but showing the categories with 0% rates. I can't see how to make a scratch report to do that, or how to edit this report, either.

Ideas?

Thanks!

    Hi @bellasarah,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I appreciate all the details you’ve provided.

In Quicken for Mac, sales tax liability and agencies are tied to invoices and tax rates. The Sales Tax report relies on transactions having both a tax rate and an associated agency assigned; otherwise, it won’t categorize the activity correctly.

When I attempted to replicate the issue, I found that the Sales Tax Report does not generate results unless at least one line item on the invoice is marked as taxable and has a defined tax rate assigned. Once that’s done, Quicken will associate the invoice with the selected agency, and any non-taxable items on the same invoice will appear under that agency as non-taxable sales.

So to answer your question: you’ll need to assign a tax rate (linked to an agency) to at least one item on the invoice. The remaining items can be left as non-taxable if appropriate.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions. I’ll be happy to help further!

Thanks for your response. I have assigned a tax rate of 0% linked to an agency to an item on the invoice, but presumably because the rate is 0%, it gets shunted into non-taxable. See attached screen shots. I'm thinking about trying to even temporarily change the tax rate to see if it will retroactively apply so I can get the sales totals for the different exempt categories. I don't love the workaround, I'd prefer it just show even with a 0% rate.

I tried that workaround and it doesn't retroactively apply the edited tax rate so it won't work either.

    Hi @bellasarah,

Thank you for outlining the steps you’ve already taken to troubleshoot. That’s very helpful.

After updating the tax rate percentage, you’ll need to refresh the invoice so the change is properly applied. To do that, please follow these steps:

    1. Save the updated tax rate with the new percentage. Screenshot 2026-02-25 at 3.38.15 PM.png
    2. Open the affected invoice.
    3. Change the tax rate on the invoice to None. Screenshot 2026-02-25 at 3.38.50 PM.png
    4. Then change it back to the correct tax rate. Screenshot 2026-02-25 at 3.38.58 PM.png
    5. Save the invoice.
    6. Run the Sales Tax report again.

This should force Quicken to update the report.

Please let me know how it goes!

Right, I'm aware of that, but I'd rather not have to update all of my invoices at tax time and then un-update them to be correct, just to get the exemption category totals. There has to be a better way. My whole goal with getting Quicken was to streamline my sales tax reporting. This is just as much work, maybe more, as doing it manually!

@Quicken Laura I think the question for the developers is if there is a reason that a tax rate specifically created as 0% can show in the Sales Tax Report under the Agency for which tax rate is defined, instead of being reported as non-taxable sales. It just doesn't make any sense to suggest a user create a wrong tax rate to get a list of transactions with this wrong rate. Why does it allow a user to create a 0% tax rate but then not report on the transactions for which that rate has been applied? It seems to me to be a scenario perhaps the developers didn't anticipate, but one which might not be difficult to fix?

@Quicken Laura I'd even be happy to create my own report but it's not at all clear how to do that.

OK, I sent the report… is there a workaround in the meantime? I don't need to file taxes until next January, but I want to make sure I'm accounting correctly throughout the year.

    Hi @bellasarah,

Thank you for sending that over. I’ll forward the information to our internal team for further review.

If you need to see the information grouped by agency in the meantime, the only available workaround would be to assign a tax rate greater than 0%. Additionally, you may consider using other business reports to review your sales data, such as the Business Accounts Receivable Aging report, which groups sales by customer.

We appreciate your patience while this is being worked on. If you have any further questions, please feel free to let me know.
