Resolve Share Mismatch of newly named Securities in new 401k Company

My company recently shifted to a new Brokerage for managing 401k and the names of some securities changed. I want to keep all 401k transaction history intact in one account so I revised the old 401k Account Details in Q to reflect new 401k mgmt. I also want to continue downloading complete positions and transactions. But now I face a slew of mismatched share balances that I'd appreciate input to fix.

As background, when I click the 401k account's gear wheel and select Reconcile Shares, the Securities Comparison Mismatch window shows 0 Shares Reported and xxxx Shares in Q associated with the old 401k Brokerage securities. The corresponding new Brokerage security shows xxxx shares reported and 0 shares in Q. That makes sense since the xxxx of the old Security Shares in Q equals the xxxx of the new Shares Reported. It's just that the Security names are different, which results in mismatches. How can I keep the legacy transactions and security names intact and fix the mismatch? It's not as simple as changing the name. Thanks.

I don't think the names, per se, have anything to do with the problem as Quicken uses ticker symbols and/or CUSIP numbers to to identify securities.

Do a Google search on a few of the new Account's security names, asking for ticker and CUSIP information and compare those to the old Account's holdings with the similar names as see if they match.

Please give us a more specific example of the old and new security names - actual names. For example the security might have gone from a Vanguard S&P500 fund to a Fidelity S&P500 fund, or to a Vanguard S&P500 ETF, or to a Vanguard S&P500 unit trust.

You may need to edit the security details of the old security and uncheck the box about Matched with online security. The Reconcile Shares my then allow you to match the new security the the new admin is sending to the old one. Just make sure they truly are the same security.

When my company recently switched 401k management firms, the original firm's statement showed only the transferred total amt and dollars of each security. There’s no reference to security share qty. As expected, the transferred amounts equal those shown on new firm's opening stmt. Unlike the old firm, latter lists the share qty and those are close to amounts listed in Q as of the 401k’s change-over.

I agree that the actual security names are probably not as big a deal as the more reliable ticker ID or CUSIP for matching old to new securities. However, no tickers or CUSIP show from previous 401k brokerage manager or in Q. The new 401k brokerage downloaded both a symbol and CUSIP ID into Q's securities. I'm not sure when or if I or Q lost the old CUSIPs along the way. I also don’t know if that’s critical for resolving the Security Qty Mismatch.

As for my 401k in Q, I verified that no securities from the old brokerage firm are checked to match with online securities and, as recommended, I changed them to 'ignore prices from brokerage.' But after fresh Q update and download, Security Qty Mismatch still results, as shown in attmt with corresponding old and new names and CUSIPs. The number of old firm's Shares in Q is about same as new firm's Shares Reported. I welcome suggestions to use the right transaction drop-down(s) in order to get Shares in Quicken from old firm moved over to new firm. It's hopefully a simple solution that I just can't figure out.

They do look to be the exact same securities in both places with basically the same share numbers. You might want to review the history of the State Street Target fund to see if some transaction fairly small transaction got overlooked, or not, if the difference is pretty immaterial.

As you appear to have been downloading information using the old broker I don't understand how the ticker symbols and CUSIPs could have simply disappeared. Maybe look back into a few recent backups - hopefully one right before the transfer - to see if that information was still there? If you can find that then using that file should, I'd think, probably get a Mismatch error but it should be entirely about the small share differences.

I was checking back-up files when you posted. CUSIPs for securities from the previous 401k mgmt firm did show. Those IDs are different than the new 401k firm's identifiers. The old firm immediately severed logins when the transition to new 401k mgmt happened 3 months ago. Coupled with the Fidelity - Q download gaps reported in Community over the past months, I've been through umpteen deactivation/reactivation cycles and the old firm's CUSIPS disappeared along the way as I changed 401k account downloads from Firm A to Fidelity.

I need to go forward and not resurrect that very old back-up and not recreate or recover months of banking and credit transactions. So the dilemma remains. What transaction(s) can be entered to resolve Security Qty Mismatches and move old firm's securities to new firm's in same Q account file? Would a security name change keep transaction history intact and resolve the Security Qty Mismatches that started this discussion? Pros + cons welcomed and appreciated.

It certainly seems to be the case that these are the same securities, assuming the share discrepancy on the SS Target Fund can be resolved.

    I would:

    • Edit the security details of each of th four existing funds.
    • Edit their tickers to be what you think they should be according to the Fidelity information.
    • You can change the names if you choose to, but likely I would not bother.
    • Uncheck their boxes so they are no longer 'Matched with online security" (KEY STEP!)
    • If the four new funds do now exist in Quicken (I can't tell from your description but I don't think they will), I would delete those four securities.

When those are reset, I would then use the Reconcile shares from the account transaction list. That should then allow you to match (and may automatically match) the funds reported by the new administrator to the four existing funds.

    Hope this helps
