If I buy the one year, it stops working if I don't renew at that time?

That depends upon WHICH Q product you buy.If you buy "Starter Edition", your data file becomes read-only. You can produce reports, but not add any new data.If you buy the higher level product, you'll lose the ability to download and about 1/4 of your screen will be taken up by "nag messages", but you can still use the product manually.
