I used to think Heineken was good beer. Not sure it's an upgrade from water.

Personally I think any beer is a downgrade from water (actually that goes for any liquor, I can't stand the taste of alcohol). An upgrade for me would be like this:

If you can get REAL, Dutch Heineken, it's pretty good. But what we mostly get here in the US is the US produced version ... which isn't as good.

Last time I was in Amsterdam was in the 20th century, and I agree the Heineken was better there. It wasn't like there was a choice; if you wanted beer, you got Heineken or Amstel, period, in that town at that time. I wonder whether they've climbed aboard the IPA bandwagon yet.

I detest those machines=too complicated and not interested in creating concoctions. I usually (politely) hand the cup to the fast food worker and request they draw me a plain old anything. Tap water would be preferred, but. . .

Busch Beer has always been plenty good enough for me, but I likely live on the other side of the tracks from some of y'all. It gets the job done. Then again, I proudly prefer Wild Turkey. :-)

In the early 80s I used to work for a company near Munich, Germany. If you worked after hours or on weekends, drinking beer in the office was allowed ... within limits, of course.

If, as a programmer or system programmer for their IBM Mainframe, you made a change which brought down the entire system or the overnight batch production process (order processing, invoicing, shipping lists, etc.) you had to pay a "penalty", a case of beer (20 bottles, 0.5 liters each), to be deposited into the fridge of the computer operators' break room. Said penalty was used to celebrate birthdays and other events with a "Brotzeit", Weisswurst, pretzels and beer.

Oh, I miss those good old days! And I paid a few of these penalties, too.

When I was in Systems for Wells Fargo, the 40 story office building wasn't exclusively WF ... only floors 3-20. On the 2nd floor was a bar/restaurant called "Mr Toad's" ... which we called the "Green Room".

On Fridays we'd all recess to the Green Room after work.

But, one particular Friday after we closed them down at 8pm, we went across the street to another bar. After we closed them down at 11pm we went to a 3rd bar.

NATURALLY, at about midnight, ALL of our pagers (8 of us) went off.

We dutifully trudged back to the office where Security was very reluctant to let us into the building because of our state of inebriation. Security finally called up to Computer Ops (and the Night Shift Ops Manager) who informed Security "they do some of their best work when drunk".

We had the system back up and running in 15 minutes.

A company I worked at in the early 1990s had a monthly all-hands combination status meeting and beer blast in the cafeteria. Most employees took a beer and sat at a table while the head honchos droned.

One of my co-worker friends and I instead stood way in the back where the beer was and helped ourselves. It was a very big cafeteria and we didn't think the honchos noticed.

When they laid us off, they pulled us both into a room and laid us off together.
