my file is very large. is there a way to remove data from several years ago?

    You can remove the old data, but you may not be happy with the result.

    How large is "very large"? Have you made extensive use of attachments? They will increase your file size significantly/

    Are you experiencing slow performance or some other problem that might be related to a large file?

    As mentioned - unless you have added Attachments - the Quicken QDF file is all your historical financial data.
    And large is relative - and does NOT impact performance - our QDF file is 228 MB -

    Which brings up the question: What does your File Information look like?

    Click Help in the Menu Bar. Shift+click About Quicken and it'll give you a File Information box. Please capture an image snapshot of this File Information box and attach it here.
    The Windows Snipping Tool (available with Windows 7 and newer) can be used to capture a partial screen image and save it to a file of file type PNG, JPG, or GIF only.
