Seems like lots of new product names and when is too early to update?

Went to store to buy copy of Quicken Deluxe which I guess is now Classic Deluxe. Found several versions I didn't know existed. Classic Deluxe, Classic Business and Personal, Classic Premier and Classic Starter. Have there always been 4 versions?

I should have never updated, was tricked into updating. Quicken never said you would be bugged to death in advertising if you didn't update!

My license expires in March 2024, is it too early to update? I think it use to be 6 months?

I have used Quicken since DOS, maybe should find alternative that don't have to renew or be bugged to death. I am just being lazy by not switching.

The different ones you mentioned are "editions", as in they are the same program with different licenses to turn on different features. They go from Starter (least features and I don't recommend to anyone other than a person starting out it is lacking so many features), Deluxe, Premier (adds more reports for tax and investment features and few other bells and whistles), Business and Personal (adds business and rental features).

Never really notice all the different names. The store had old empty boxes on display to take up to register. Then they have someone go back to find a box with the real CD in it. However, they couldn't find it as the boxes on shelf look nothing like the boxes they have in back to actually sell. So she bought 4 boxes up to counter and ask me which one I wanted.

At least it was on sale, now not sure if I can load now or wait until March. Guess it doesn't matter can just wait. Use to be 6 months, but the way they change things, it may have changed with the name change.

The versions should be the same names as before. They just added the "Classic" to it.

I'm staying on Quicken 2013 Premier for Windows.

Smart keeping that 2013 version. I have a CD of 2015 Deluxe, thought about completely removing my 2022 Deluxe and loading the 2015 Deluxe. Not sure if it would make me register? If it wanted me to register the 2015 Deluxe, I doubt that would work. The link to register wouldn't exist anymore. As far as history, I wouldn't care, I would just use the balances from the other version and start over. Quicken was not totally honest in the way they made you believe you could keep using the product without paying annually.

The only thing that has really changed other than adding Classic to the name is that before there was one more edition above Home & Business, which was Home, Business and Rental, now basically the Home & Business was removed. This happened about the same time they went to subscription.

As far, as how soon you can activate before the end of the subscription, I think it always been 3 months, but I don't really remember for sure.

@Divemaster, you will not be able to get Quicken 2015 to work. Without authentication, Quicken (2014 - 2017) will not open a data file.

You can get the install for Quicken 2013 here:

And the answer to registering Quicken 2014 through Quicken 2017 is that you are correct, it will no longer allow you to register it after the install (you can't log into the Quicken Id because of a change in the server login and that is required to register Quicken).

Already got another year, but will test that out on laptop. I don't really care about converting old data, I can just start a new database. The only time I ever go back and run some reports is when doing taxes. My current copy is now good until March 2025.

@Divemaster - It's good that you got the CD on sale. Just a couple of comments:

    • Make sure the CD you bought is not for new subscribers. Many of the sale prices offered by retailers are for new subscribers only and cannot be used to renew a subscription. It should say it somewhere on the outside of the box. There are some sale prices offered once in a while for current subscribers but you should check which you have just to be sure.
    • You can use the activation code from a retail CD to extend a subscription within 6-months of the subscription expiration date (https://www.quicken.com/support/quicken-subscription-membership-faqs).

Thanks, I noticed on Amazon that it said for New Subscribers on a few. I went to a local Office Depot and actually all I got was an activation code. Already used it and all went fairly well.

Great! Sounds like your subscription is good to go now for an additional 12 months.

I wasn't aware that at least some retailers are now just providing just the activation code but that makes sense because the activation code is all that is really needed. Those who need the installation software can download it for free from Quicken.com so the need for a CD for most people no longer exists.
