pending transactions causing difficulty with transaction edits
I was so excited when the latest update indicated it would support downloading pending transactions! I turned it on immediately and I love seeing it all in one place. HOWEVER, there seems to be an issue.
When I have pending transactions turned on, I am getting what appears to be duplicate transactions that suddenly appear while I'm editing the current actual transactions that downloaded. Clicking to another account and then back to the one I'm editing sometimes clears the duplicate out, and sometimes doesn't. Sometimes the presence of these not-actually-there duplicates causes my edits to not save. I can't ignore them. Sometimes have to exit and get back in to make them go away. But they do always disappear, lending them to be a viewing issue of some kind.
So far, it seems to stop when I turn the pending transactions back off. I'm going to keep testing.
This issue is occurring across three different QDFs that I use regularly, including the one saved directly on my C:\ drive.
I chatted with support (Case #11003833) and got the runaround that it must be my file(s). Shared my screen with support and we did a repair/validate and moved a file to a new location, etc. and issue repeated. Still was told it must be my files. I asked for my issue to be escalated. I was told I should post on the Community, so here I go! Long time Quicken user, first time Community poster. :)

It is the pending transaction that are duplicating, right?
Also, are your pending transactions in the register or in the Pending Transactions tab?
I have my pending transactions in the register, and I can't say that I have seen such behavior, but I'm not totally surprised either. Quicken has had "refresh" problems from time to time.

EDIT (5/1/2024): I incorrectly stated below that all the FIs that I am seeing these issues with are set up with the EWC+ connection. That is not accurate because the FI that seems to be experiencing these issues the most is Elan Financial Services and Elan is EWC, not EWC+ and this has been corrected below. The others are EWC+ connected FIs.
Pending transactions has been working pretty well for me but starting this week some issues have been popping up:
- There have been a few pending transactions that are not deleting when the transactions have been downloaded as posted. This has been observed when they are shown in the register and when shown beneath the register. These pending transactions do not ever delete on their own, even after several days and OSUs.
- There have been some pending transactions that get downloaded 2X (during 2 different OSUs on different days). When the posted transaction later downloads, only 1 of the 2 pending transactions gets automatically removed. This has been observed both when shown in the register and when shown below the register. The remaining pending transaction does not ever delete on it's own.
- Pending transactions will always have the transaction date in both the Date and Posting Date columns. But posted transactions will show the posting date in both columns. (This can only be seen when the pending transaction does not get removed during the download of the the posted transaction.) Could this be a contributing factor?
- When a pending transaction is in the register and the posted transaction has been downloaded and the pending transaction remains in the register: Editing the downloaded posted transaction will cause the pending transaction to change to match the edit made in the posted transaction. It will also change the pending transaction to no longer show as "Pending" and instead appear to be a normal transaction. This results in an exact duplicate of the edited downloaded transaction but sometimes with a different date.
- When a transaction is entered manually and the pending transaction is later downloaded there is no indication of a match with the manually entered transaction (not a big issue but it would be a nice if it did). But when the posted transaction later downloads it will sometime not match with the manually entered transaction and it cannot then be manually matched.
- When restoring backup files to see if these issues can be duplicated: Sometime, yes, and sometimes, no.
These things have happened only with 3 different accounts with 3 different FIs: Elan Financial Services Fidelity Rewards Credit Card (EWC), Chase Freedom Visa credit card (EWC+), PNC Bank checking account (EWC+).
But what is odd is that I have these accounts set up in 3 different unique test data files plus in my main data file. These issues are not repeating identically across all of these data files. For instance:
- In test file #1 the Elan card is showing more of these issues but test file #2 shows only only some of the issues in #1 while in test file #3 there are no issues.
- For the Chase account, the issue is appearing only in my main file but not in any of the test files.
- For PNC the issue is appearing only in the 3rd test file but not #1 nor in #2. But what makes it even more interesting is that I have two different setups for this checking account in this file in #3…..one with my login and one with my wife's login. The issue with PNC is showing up only in my login setup, not in my wife's.
No similar issues have been observed with other FIs or other EWC and EWC+ connected accounts (ones that are downloading pending transactions).
To downplay this some: This is not happening with many transactions. It seems the issue pops up at random with a small number of transactions. So, I don't want to make this sound like the world is falling apart.
It is certainly odd behavior. Is it because there is something different and inconsistent in how Elan, Chase and PNC are downloading pending transaction vs. other FIs? Or is there some issue with how the Quicken software manages pending transactions? Or is there something in how the aggregator's or Quicken's servers are managing the data and downloads?

Chris_QPW, the duplicates I was "seeing" (I agree with you it seems like a refresh issue) were actual transactions, not pending.
I've had pending transactions turned off for days now, and I've had no repeat of the refresh issues making it appear there are duplicate transactions. When using before, I didn't notice the issues Boatnmaniac mentioned.
I won't try turning on pending transactions again until there is a new update. It's just not worth the trouble.

I'm at the same point. Turning on Pending Transactions creates chaos whenever I edit any register line, and turning the feature off instantly cleans it up. I don't think the entries are actually being duplicated; it just displays some/many entries multiple times, and others vanish. I'll wait for the next release.

I'm seeing similar issues with a duplicate transaction showing up. I've even had a situation where the duplicate temporarily replaced an another transaction causing a major balance error.
Once I turned off the pending feature, all is fine.
Definitely needs some bugs worked out before I'll turn that on again, and I'll need to hear from Quicken to know it's been addressed before I will.
Nice try.

In my 2 test files with Pending Transactions enabled, there has been no improvement regarding the observations noted in my last post. But where it used to be rather uncommon for pending transactions not being deleted when the posted transactions are downloaded it now occurs about 25%-50% of the time (depending on the FI).
I will continue to test this in 2 of my test files hoping to see some improvement but I am now of the opinion that rollout of the Pending Transactions feature, especially the part where the transactions are shown in the register, is at best only of marginal value. It's easy enough to delete "stuck" pending transactions, to keep them from messing up the account balance and to fix Online Balance issues they can sometimes cause. But it is a personal choice as to whether or not the value of seeing pending transactions is worth the "clean-up" efforts that are needed.

I have the same "duplicate" problem with pending transactions when editing cleared transactions. I turned on pending transactions 3 or 4 times and end up turning it off again.

It has been hidden mist for me. One thing I can say for sure is that if you have to reset your connection to the financial institution you'll probably get where the pending will not be cleared when The cleared one comes in.
One thing I found that was sort of interesting was the downloaded ID for the pending transactions. It looks like some kind of hash of the transaction information. My guess on that would be that they do the same for each transaction to comes in that's cleared and if that matches the same hash they were removed the pending. Have no idea why would fail in some situations.
