Redundancy in use of password

I prefer to set up my account with a password. However when I do this I have to again use a password to update. Why? The object is to avoid letting a third party access your accounts without a password. You should not have to use a password again to update accounts once the accounts are opened and visible because you entered the password.

I believe you are confusing different things.

    The different possible passwords.

    • Quicken Id
    • Data file
    • Password Vault
    • Financial institution
    • Password for modifying transactions.

It sounds like you are talking about the Data file and the Password Vault. When opening the data file, that is the Data file password, and when running One Step Update if you have any Direct Connect accounts and use the Password Vault for saving the financial institution's password, it will prompt for the Password Vault password.

There have been requests for these two to be the same, and they even tried that for a while. It led to problems, and they stopped doing that.

    Hello @jerryhoyt1,

Could you please elaborate and specify which passwords you are referring to? Are you using a data file password to open Quicken? And exactly which password are you being prompted for when you attempt to update (Quicken ID, bank password, etc)?

Check back and let us know! Thank you.

i use a data file password to access accounts. That is all i need. Having to reenter password to update is redundant. What is the point of needing two passwords.?

Is the password you're "reentering" also the data file password or is it prompting for a different password like your Quicken ID?

The reason I ask is that it shouldn't be asking you for neither when trying to run a One Step Update. However, depending on which password you are being prompted for, will determine which troubleshooting steps we will need to take.

It may also be helpful if you could provide a screenshot of the password prompt you receive when attempting to run a One Step Update. If needed, please refer to this Community FAQ for instructions on how to attach a screenshot. Alternatively, you can also drag and drop screenshots to your response if you are not given the option to add attachments.

    Thank you!

Let me try and rephrase my question. If I set a File Password I have to enter the password in order to open (visually see) my quicken accounts. Immediately upon entering the file password Quicken opens showing all accounts and also has a spot requiring a vault password to update. So if I want to view and then update I have to enter file password and vault password. I should only have to open file password.
