Investment account Holdings and Summary Totals don't match
I'm having a problem with my morgan stanley accounts where when clicking and viewing the "Holdings" Button, the totals match my online MS account exactly, however, the total and the bottom of the transactions does not match. I've looked for placeholder and hidden transactions and don't have any. I've also tried validate and super validate which also doesn't correct the problem. What can cause this issue?

Hello @bob@9,
Based on what I'm seeing in the screenshot you provided, the most likely reason for the discrepancy is a difference between what is downloaded directly from the financial institution and the most recent price/value information provided by the Quote service. Depending on the financial institution, the information they send may be based off of values at closing on the last business day, while quotes update more frequently.
I hope this helps!

This is true. I always manually update prices from the account statement to the last day of the month in Quicken. I sometimes have to fudge to stock totals or price in the 5th decimal to tie out perfectly. That way I know everything is correct at month end in Quicken.

What seems odd to me are they are all totals within quicken, presumably two screens with the same data totalling different.

" ... the "Holdings" Button [] totals match my online MS account exactly, however, the total [at] the bottom of the transactions does not match."
Make sure the account Holdings "As of:" date includes every transaction in the account.
If that doesn't explain the problem; try looking for a Quicken display, or report, that produces the same incorrect totals that appear at the foot of the Quicken account (compute the amount of the difference and look for one, or more, securities/transactions, that equal the amount of the difference).
Customize displays/reports to "Include all dates" or equivalent.
- Tab > Investing > Portfolio
- Reports > Investing > Portfolio value (possibly use the Show Lots button)
- Reports > Net Worth & Balances > Account Balances (check "Show Detail" on the Display tab of the Customize dialog to see security values).
Although you said you tried Validate/Super validate, you didn't specify which Validate options you chose. If you didn't try these options before: you can try having Quicken "Rebuild investing lots" (and for a real long shot: "Correct investing price history"): both are options in File > Validate and Repair.
Quicken should automatically create a backup before the Validate starts (and you can make your own as well), so if the Validate makes things worse (or even doesn't make things better), you may want to revert to the backup.

Thanks. Good advice. I found that dispite the "reconsile shares" saying the share count matched, for one security it didn't. I did an adjust shares however, the new share count doesn't reflect accuratly on the "holdings" button but does agree on the portfolio balance report. So the report and the total in the Net Worth match but the "holdings" are still wrong. Did super validate with all the options including investment lots and correct pricing history. Didn't make any difference.

I'm not sure I fully understand your situation, but I'll offer a couple of thoughts.
As I recall, Adjust Share Balance (Placeholder *) transactions can cause problems with the account Holdings tab. I'm not sure whether any specific underlying cause was ever found. If you already had Placeholders in the account when you started this discussion, perhaps that is causing the problem.
"Reconcile shares" compares your holdings (as computed by Quicken), with the Holdings reported by your financial institution (as seen on the Holdings tab in the Quicken Online Center for the account). The Online Center holdings are only as current as the last download for the account - the date of which is noted on that same Holdings tab in the Online Center.
You might want to double-check your Security name(s) and CUSIP numbers to see if there are any discrepancies there. It might require an Account Reconcile using something like the Investing > Portfolio Value report (with an appropriate End Date) to compare to a financial institution statement.
[One thing you can try (to possibly see whether there is something fishy in your current Quicken file) is to create a New (test) Quicken file, and activate the account in question for downloading in that test file. You're likely to get Placeholders in the test file, but you still might get some insight into the problem.]
[ (*) "Placeholder" transactions are often hidden. They can be unhidden by putting a checkmark beside the Quicken Preference > Investments option to "Show hidden transactions". A Placeholder transaction has an "Action" value of "Entry".]-JP

Issue resolved. . It turns out there was one corrupted security in different accounts. It wasn’t found by any of the integrity checks, super validate, rebuilding lots, etc. It would show a value on the “portfolio value report” but NOT on the holdings report. I deleted all of the transactions for the security then revalidated, then reentered the transactions and now the report and the holdings view all match exactly. Not sure how this occurred but I think it’s very strange the validate doesn’t find something like this that doesn’t balance. Thank you all for the advice, it pointed me in the right direction.
