Still Unable to Verify Financial Institution
In January I started getting the error dialog "Unable to Verify Financial Institution" when attempting to upload QFX files from Wings Credit Union. This only affects my credit card accounts; savings and checking work fine.
I am using Quicken Classic Deluxe.
I posted this message earlier here
Since then, I was involved in a long and fruitless discussion with the IT at Wings who seem to think that nothing is wrong and I can't get any help for them solving this, and I have no idea who to talk to at Quicken. Anyone have any ideas how to solve this issue.
I was suggested that I use "One-Step Update", which I use for my Wells Fargo account. I would not willingly go the QFX file route. Once upon a time I did use "One-Step Update" on the Wings account and it worked fine until sometime in early 2021, when it quit working. I did as was suggested, close my accounts and reopen them and it really messed up my accounting and still would not find my credit card accounts. It took me about a week to recover, so I am not eager to experiment at this point.

By "Wings Credit Union" do you mean "Wings Financial Credit Union"?
If so, here is what the FIDIR list shows. The FIDIR list shows which financial institutions support Quicken, when connection methods they support, which types of accounts they support and which types of Quicken services they support.:
56478 56478 56478 Wings Financial Credit Union
https://www.wingsfinancial.com/ 1-800-692-2274
https://digital.wingscu.com/login ACTIVEBANKING&WEB-CONNECT
BANKING,CREDIT,ACCOUNTINFO&EXP-WEB-CONNECT NOT_QBP NA
Web Connect (WC) is the connection method whereby we log into the online account, manually download the transactions/account data in QFX file format and then manually import that file into Quicken. The FIDIR list shows they support Banking accounts only for WC. Banking = Checking and Savings. Credit (for credit cards) is not supported. So, that is why you are getting that error message.
The FIDIR list also shows that Express Web Connect (EWC) is supported for Banking and for Credit. EWC is one of the two methods that can be downloaded via One Step Updte or Update Now and you are are already familiar with that.
What this is saying is that if you want to download your credit cards transactions you will need to set them up with EWC because Wings does not support doing that with WC.
Some suggestions/comments for if you wish to set up your credit card accounts to download via EWC:
- Enter and save the Opening Balance dollar amounts into the Memo fields of those transactions. Once in a while when adding or changing the connection method of an established account, the Opening Balance dollar amount will get changed. Having it entered into the Memo field beforehand makes it very easy to determine if this has happened and what you need to do to correct for it.
- Make sure any transactions that are already in your credit card account registers are all marked as Reconciled.
- Back up your data file. If something does go wrong you can simply restore the backup file and everything will then be as it is now.
- During the download process you will likely be prompted to tell Quicken what to do with the downloaded data. Make sure to LINK them to the existing accounts in Quicken.
- If the account balances are not correct: Check the Opening Balance transactions to see if the dollar amounts have been changed. Correct the transaction dollar amounts if needed.
- If the account balances still are not correct: Scroll back through the register looking for duplicate transactions. If you find any duplicates, delete one of them and retain the other. Typically, any duplicates will be found within the last 90 days (or less).
At this point your accounts should be in balance.
If you really do not want to do download via EWC, there are 2 alternatives:
- Does Wings allow for manual downloads in QIF, Excel, CSV or OSF formats? If so you can download and install a free file conversion program called ImportQIF from . This program was developed and is maintained by a long-time Quicken user and very active participant in this Community. It can convert these types of files into a QIF file that can then be imported into Quicken. Many have posted in this Community that it works quite well.
- Your only other option is to manually enter all the transactions into the account register.

were the CC accounts being downloaded into a QFX and Imported - Was this working prior to January 2024 ?
I looked at the entry from November 2021 - and it still had the Web-Connect - only supported Banking - no Credit -

Yes, I was successfully downloading QFX files before January 2024. I have been doing this since 2021 when "One-Step Update" quit working for me.
And @Boatnmaniac it is "Wings Financial Credit Union". When I posted my original question back in January, someone posted about the entries in the fidir.txt, so I presented it to the IT contact at Wings. She said she would show it to the technical staff, but all they would tell me was that it was not their problem and it worked fine for them…
I have tried CSV, but get the same error "Unable to Verify Financial Institution".
Anyone have an idea how I can get past this?

@Wick as long as the fidir.txt file is like that you can't get around it (without a hack). And the only "one" that can change that file is Intuit (Quicken Inc's aggregator). And the only way to get a message to them to do that is through Quicken Support. Note that they might not even change it if it wasn't changed in error (as in they have been told that is what is supported by the financial institution agreement).
Note one could change the FID and INTU.BID field to a financial institution that has these properly set in the fidir.txt file. (And ImportQIF can do this edit for you in a ongoing manner, but is hack for sure).

and hard to believe that the manual Import was actually working -
with the FIDIR list indicating NO Credit Card support - Web-Connect -
Here is the entry from November 2021 - NO Credit on the Web-Connect (manual download & Import)You might open your downloaded QFX file with Notepad - its just plain text -
and scroll down looking for the FID/BID bank numbers - and see if they match the 56478 listed below ?56478 56478 56478 Wings Financial Credit Union

If WC was working back in January and it is not working now it means that Wings requested Intuit to change the FIDIR listing to exclude credit cards downloads which would be a contractual change.
Or it means that something happened at Intuit to make that change to the FIDIR listing, probably accidentally. I have heard of this happening once in a while but it is rare.
Quicken Support should be informed of this so that Quicken can request Intuit to investigate the matter. If it was a mistake, Intuit will correct the listing. If it was a contractual change, I doubt that Intuit will do anything unless and until Wings updates the contract Intuit to, once again, include WC for credit cards downloading.
To report this issue you can contact Quicken Support via Chat or Phone at
(make sure popups are allowed for Quicken.com).Or you could report it from within Quicken via Help > Report a Problem.
My recommendation would be to try setting up the EWC connection, again. I'm sure that more than one of use would be happy to help you get EWC successfully set up with Wings and in a way that will not put your data at risk..

I did try One-Step Update again, and again did not work for my Credit Card. It also duplicated my savings account, so now I have that mess to deal with, AND it only worked once. Now I get errors trying to update my savings and checking. In addition it keeps popping up my browser asking me to log in to my Wings account, even though I am logged in.
I have reported this to Quicken, but all I get is crickets…
