HOW DO I MERGE 2 INVESTMENT ACCOUNTS
WIN 11 ENTERPRISE R58.9 I want to merge 2 accounts (2 brokerages) into one. Last time I did this, I exported a file from one and imported it into the other. I can't find instructions for this, but it's what I'm trying to do. Is this method no longer available? What's the current procedure?

Go to the register for the account you want to move the transactions FROM. Pull down the gear menu in the upper right. One of the available commands is Move Transactions, which is exactly what you want. Select All, specify the destination account, and click Move.

Are these accounts in a single Quicken data file or in two different Quicken data files?

Answered by Sherlock, Nov 2019:
If you moved securities from one brokerage to another brokerage, I suggest you use the Shares Transferred Between Accounts wizard: open the source account, select Enter Transactions and Shares Transferred Between Accounts in the Enter transaction: pull-down menu

This is the wrong answer in 2024. If both accounts are in the same file, use Move Transactions as I suggested. If the accounts are in different data files, let us know.

In my opinion the answer to your question depends on exactly what your situation is.
If the accounts are in different Quicken files, Export/Import is your only option.
If the accounts are in the same Quicken file, has it actually always been one account in real life? If so, moving all the transactions from one account to the other would most accurately match your situation.
If the accounts are in the same file and you are consolidating two real life accounts into one, I think clicking on Enter Transactions in the account that is going away and using Shares Transferred between accounts would be the best approach. This will create one Removed transaction for each security you currently hold in the old account and Added transactions for each tax lot of each security that is moved to the new account. This will preserve the holding period and cost basis for the shares that are moved. The transactions that were actually in the old account will remain there.
