Scammed through Quicken Chat

I was having an issue signing in the day my Quicken Classic Deluxe was renewed. I started a chat through Quicken and was told that someone would call me in 2 minutes. Someone did and said they needed permission to access my Computer. I allowed it as it came through live Quicken Chat. I was told that I had corrupt files and I needed to pay $899.99 to get it fixed. I disconnected but have np idea what, if anything they did. I was able to call the number back and they answered. [Removed- Incorrect Information]. I alerted Quicken but so far rhey have done nothing. Obviously there are some corrupt people working on Quicken Chat Line.

How did you initiate the chat? Was it by selecting “Contact Support” on the Help menu? Or did you Google for something like “Quicken Help”?

There are scammers out there pretending to be Quicken Support trying to rip people off, it’s more likely that you wound up talking to one of them and not to an actual support person.

In any event, it’s good that you pulled the plug as soon as you did.

You clearly did not get "Quicken Chat" from Official Quicken Support, you contacted one of the various sites that say they are Official Quicken Support, but aren't. This particular scam has been around for decades.

Did they access your actual Quicken file? You may want to disconnect all your Quicken Accounts from downloading and then go and change your user names and passwords with the financial institutions associated with these Accounts, then reconnect with the new credentials.

I agree with Tom. Even though Quicken Mac does not store your passwords in your Quicken file, it would be prudent to change your banking passwords at this point just in case.

If you did a web search for Quicken support and clicked on a link there then it's very likely that you were not using official Quicken Chat. There are a lot of 3rd party companies who will deceptively claim to be Quicken Support but they are not and then will charge you outrageous fees for their assistance. The real Quicken site will never charge a fee for support. You can read more about this deceptive if not illegal practice at https://www.quicken.com/support/handling-customer-complaints-about-paid-support-3rd-party/ .

The only access for Quicken Chat is at https://www.quicken.com/support/#contact-support .

Since you allowed them access to your computer, if you have not already done so, you should probably run an anti-malware deep scan on your computer.

In addition, if you have any files on your computer which include financial institutions account numbers and log-ins or other confidential information such as Social Security numbers, you should probably be seriously considering changing your logins for those accounts.

And, if I were in your shoes, I would also go to the 3 credit bureaus and place a Credit Freeze on my credit information. Freezes are just like Locks but they are free whereas there will be a fees for Locks. It will help to ensure that no one will be able to fraudulently use your SSN to open loans, credit cards or other financial accounts in your name.

    Hello @rewizard,

I have taken the time to look into this issue and can see that you were able to get into contact with Quicken Support. As advised by them, please send this information to spoof@quicken.com. The number that you provided is not Quicken Support. You can find routes to contact Quicken Support through this link.

    I hope that helps!
