    [Removed - Speculation]

If backups are at your machine (USB, HD, NAS - not via cloud) are all "automatic" then would not a ransomware or similar attack cause you to lose all of them? I also plug in a USB stick once in a while (used to be with reminder) for another backup. I also use a cloud backup.

So why do the "Revo Uninstaller" fix if every time there's an update/patch it reverts back to the same old issue?

We pay good money to Quicken for a program that actually works so we expect Quicken to do the required fixes, not the customer.

Why is this taking so long?

I only had to do the "revo uninstall" once. I've been through several Quicken updates since and the reminder still works. Currently on 59.10.

I have had to do the revo uninstall every time they have pushed an update, including the last one which was specifically about backups! Pretty much given up now.

    Also currently on 59.10

    @Quicken Kristina

    Hi Kristina,

Any reason why this issue is taking so long to fix? This thread began back in July.

I did just the install/reinstall with the downloaded Quicken Classic. The "install" will first do an uninstall then a reinstall automatically. Once I logged in after the reinstall, everything seemed to come back the way I left it even with my working file launched. Backup reminder now works. I will see if that reminder goes away after the next update, but at least easier than "really starting over" with the Revo uninstall etc., since that looks like it may not "stick" either.

Dan Violette, yes please let us know if it sticks after the next update. Thank you.

    @Dan Violette

Glad you "fixed" it with a simple "uninstall". I tried that a few times and still had the issue. Only after I purged all the remnants, and the fresh install, did the reminder popup work.

I didn't actually use Revo (why I put it in quotes) but did search through hidden folders to purge them all out and a deep scan of the registry for any Quicken keys/values to nuke them as well, like Revo does. Mine has "survived" over the past 2 (I think) upgrades.

Please do report back after the next upgrade.

Ugh! The basic reinstall DID NOT WORK. The last update took away the reminder for doing a backup despite being set. I remind to put onto a USB stick every 10 times of use to go along with the regular on PC auto backup (and cloud autobackup). REVO here I come. That seems to be sticking per others. /Dan

Just an FYI - REVO doesn’t stick either. Gets broken after every update by Quicken. Even the last 2 updates which were about “backups.”
@Quicken Kristina - wish you had the ear of your support team. This has been an issue for over 3 months and countless updates now.

I decided to just put a reminder in my phone since Quicken seems to have no interest in fixing an obvious problem of their own making.

"Just an FYI - REVO doesn’t stick either."

That hurts! I guess I will just remember to backup externally myself for now. Maybe the easy reinstall once in a while.

For me not an efficient use of my time, but I wonder outloud that instead of letting Quicken apply updates automatically if skipping that step when one is shown as available and just going straight to downloading and applying the lastest version from their website would avoid the problem that their update process is creating. Just a thought.

@jaws2 That was suggested when I encountered the issue (in another thread). If you have Windows UAC turned on, you can stop Quicken from auto-updating. Since the patches are released in channel first, it may be a few days before it appears on the download site. You may have to deal with the UAC message every time you launch Quicken until you apply the patch.

Since I don't, (UAC is OFF) I had to go another route. I downloaded Quicken and the latest patch (at the time) and had them on my local drive. Then I uninstalled Quicken and rebooted. Once booted I disconnected from my local network (so Quicken couldn't update), I installed Quicken but did not start it. Then I installed the patch. Reconnected to my LAN and launched Quicken, signed in, recovered my data file, did a sync. All looked OK until I closed Quicken and no popup appeared. I fiddled around with the backup settings and reset warnings to no avail. It was only after I did the "deep clean" did it come back. I can't say what item(s) finally purged actually fixed it.

I have some scheduled backups occurring weekly. So during this period, I just made a "mental note" to manually back up my file just prior to the scheduled event.

One could also write a small batch file (script) to copy the file to another connected drive, then schedule it to happen using the Windows Scheduler. The only difference is Quicken does it based on usage, the script does it based on time.

    Hello All,

We're still working on a permanent fix, but in the meantime, this work around should help resolve the issue. Please follow these steps:

    1. Close Quicken and go to this path- C:\ProgramData\Quicken\Config
    2. In this folder you'll find a file named"QUICKEN.INI" open this file in Notepad.
    3. Look for the flag "AutoBackup" If you see AutoBackup=0, then change that value to "AutoBackup=3" and save the file.
    4. Once saved, open Quicken and check the preference for backup. Ensure manual backup reminder is set to "1".
    5. Now, close Quicken and test to see if you're now getting the reminder.

Note - ProgramData is a hidden file. If you need to make hidden files visible, according to Microsoft's support page, follow these steps:

    Windows 11

    1. Open File Explorer  from the taskbar.
    2. Select View Show Hidden items.

    Windows 10

    1. Open File Explorer from the taskbar.
    2. Select View Options > Change folder and search options.
    3. Select the View tab and, in Advanced settings, select Show hidden files, folders, and drives and OK.

Please let me know how it goes!

thank you @Quicken Kristina I’ll give this a shot in the next few days. It does sound like a more promising work around and that maybe the tech team is finally engaged on a path to a more permanent solution.

As an option, open File Explorer and paste in C:\ProgramData\Quicken\Config into the path field. Press enter and it should take you right there.

    @Quicken Kristina

    Works great! 😁👍️

Note: my QUICKEN.INI was shown as QUICKEN

@Quicken Kristina - Am I correct in assuming this will need to be done after every update until it’s fixed?

  • nmestanas
    nmestanas Member ✭✭✭✭

@Paul Roques That's because one of the other options is to "Hide Extensions for Known File Types". If checked, it does not display extensions for types it recognizes (like INI, DOC, DOCX, JPG, etc.). Toggle the check mark off if you want to see the extensions for all files.

Thanks to Kristina and the Quicken team, this works now! Look forward to permanent fix. Thanks, again to all who persisted, though it's a minor thing, it is nice.

I have been delaying applying the latest Quicken update in hopes of testing a potential fix. I can confirm that applying that update did change the autobackup flag in Quicken.ini from 3 to 0 and that switching it back to 3 does indeed get the manual backup reminder working again.

While having to do that after each program update isn't ideal, its a far cry better than uninstalling Quicken including removing registry entries with REVO (or manually!) and then reinstalling.

Not sure it means anything but with this mornings update it did not revert back and is still showing the backup reminder 👍️

Did my update this morning and all settings remained. Even got my manual back reminder! :)

The manual backup reminder no longer works after a Quicken update. The setting for the reminder remains correct but no reminder appears upon exiting. The only solution is a complete reinstall of Quicken.

    Hello @W_A_C,

I merged your post with the ongoing discussion. A full uninstall/reinstall is one way to correct the issue, but there is another work around while waiting for the fix. Please see this earlier post for more information:

    I hope this helps!
