Quicken Classic vs. Quicken Classic Home & Business

Let me see if I can make this understandable. Have been using Quicken (Classic/Premier) for decades and QuickBooks before I no longer needed it and before you two 'broke up'. Fast forward to 'now'. Quicken is great for our personal data, etc. This year, we bought a new laptop for#1 son and, I also bought QH&B to help him with his family's finance tracking.

  1. The laptop hadn't arrived yet so I went ahead and bought QH&B, ordering from my primary computer. Imagine my surprise when, of course, now that I think about it, Quicken updated my Quicken Classic to Quicken Classic Home & Business. I was expecting a Quicken .exe file…
  2. The new laptop finally arrived but I am reluctant to try installing the QH&B on the laptop what with all this gfarg (apologies to MAD magazine) going on. (I'm still westling with Win 11). Ugh, but that's another story.
  3. In the meantime, I did find a .exe file for, ostensibly, QH&B. I am understandably 'nervous and jerky' to move forward. Side note; been in high-technology/computer field since the late 70's. It's not helping me here. haha.
  4. Interestingly, I had just paid the annual update for my Quicken Classic/Premier (whatever it was) about I week before ordering the QH&B for the new laptop.
  5. I don't really need QH&B on my local office computers, but it's here. (I don't think it's the full version; can't find the Budget section (yet), but I am concerned that the full version of QH&B makes it to the laptop.
  6. A. Does any of this make sense and B. Any advice?

Thanks for listening,
DD

When you purchase Quicken from the Quicken website it immediately activates the subscription. And it activates it for the account that you are logged into. Since you were most likely logged into your account instead of a new one created for your son, you have basically extended/upgraded your account to Home and Business. Note that if you had bought from a retailer, you would have got an "activation code" that would be applied when installing Quicken.

I believe you are going to have to talk to Quicken Support to get this fixed:

Your mistake was purchasing the subscription for Quicken using your Quicken ID and not using a new Quicken ID (in your son's name). What you did was renew your subscription and upgraded it to QH&B.

Depending how long ago that you did all this, Q has a 30 refund policy. You could return the H&B and then rebuy it using a new Quicken ID (in your son's name)

As suggested by Chris_QPW, contact Q support see what they can do to help you.
