I request 2 improvements for Quicken Starter and above regarding the register split transaction window to save user time.

  1. Button to clear (zero out) ONLY the amounts listed from previous usage.
  2. Button to ALPHABETIZE list by category name.

Some of my credit card transactions have 20-30 categories.

What? You should not be splitting the credit card payment. Doesn't the Starter Edition let you add a credit card account?

    To enter credit card....

The proper way is to set up a credit card ACCOUNT and enter the charges into it when the purchase is made and assigning it to a category. The transactions need to be entered with the date you charged it, not the date you pay the credit card bill.

Then when you pay the bill you TRANSFER the payment from your checking account to the credit card account. Then when you download the payment from the bank you match it to the one you already entered.  Then your credit card account should match what you actually owe at any time.

When you enter the payment in your checking account you put the credit card account name in for the category using square brackets around the name to indicate it is a transfer...like this… [credit card] or newer versions have a Transfer column.

Why do you have that splits lines? Are you using a split as is it was a credit card account transactions?

and a note on why things might take a long long time, it might be just because that if there isn’t enough popularity for your idea, quicken, Inc. isn’t going to work on it. Not to mention that it used be Intuit, so we are talking about different people now. Currently for quicken windows an idea needs about 50 votes for even to be considered.

Yes if you are splitting out a credit card payment there is a better way to do it. You should not be splitting out payments in your checking account.

IF you're indeed talking about using your checking account splits to record your card purchases, there's a better way that actually meets your requests.

Create a Credit card account and record your card transactions there. That account register can be sorted by any register column, and sorted in either direction, and then re-sorted by clicking on the DATE column header.

And, if you use the same merchants frequently, you can save a Memorized transaction for that merchant with a $0 amount. You can even have your alphabetized categories included in the split of that memorized transaction.

I'd vote against this idea, if that was possible, because what you're asking is actually already available … if you just use a Card account. 👎️

To complete the method @NotACPA describes, when you pay the credit card bill, you record it as a transfer from your checking account to the credit card account.

For spending reports, include both the checking and credit card accounts and if necessary, on the Advanced tab set Transfers to Exclude internal. With that setting, the payment transfers will not be included in the report.
