Track Gold price in Quicken Classic Canadian Edition

I've seen discussions about tracking the price of gold but it doesn't seem to work for me in my Canadian edition of Quicken Classic. Does anyone have any ideas about how to do this? I would like to do it in Canadian dollars but even in USD would be better than nothing. They mention ^XAUUSD but that is not working.

In what type of account are you holding the gold investment? What's the currency of that account? Because, in Q, there can only be a single currency type in any account … so if your account currency is CAD, that might explain why you can't download gold in USD.

Just on a wild hunch, what happens if you change that symbol to ^XAUCAD

It should be possible to get price information for a security that tracks gold without holding the security; i.e. obtaining price data should be independent of holding shares and the Quicken account(s) in which they are held. Hence, I'm assuming - and the OP can correct me if I'm wrong - is that the issue is that the OP is not receiving price quotes for whatever gold-indexed securities he has tried.

I'm open to trying to see if I get the prices, if the OP or others indicate which index is desirable/acceptable. I don't believe ^XAUCAD is viable because that is from the FOREX exchange and the Canadian version of Quicken doesn't include the FOREX exchange. I believe we need to use a security that is traded on TSX. Would CGL (iShares Gold Bullion ETF) be acceptable?

I will comment that I've had some odd behaviour with price quotes lately. For example, yesterday I added a security and couldn't get any price quote while the market was open, but today I have price history for that security.

As a test, I just tried adding CGL. Like the example, above, I can't get any price data for CGL today, but perhaps it will start coming in over the next few days?

I think I have it figured out at least to show it in US dollars. I have a number of gold coins in 1/4 to 1 oz. weights so I just wanted an approximate valuation using the gold content. I created an account called Gold Coins in US Dollar currency. I entered the amount of 5 shares. I named a security "Gold" and used the symbol ^XAUUSD and downloaded the price. It now shows up with the total for 5 "shares" with an approximate value of just over $13 K which seems correct. I will see how it updates over the next few days. ^XAUCAN did not work.
