How can I stop Quicken Classic from assigning downloaded transactions to its built-in categories, such as Food? I have been using Quicken for 20 years and prefer to usethe categories I have created in the Category List.

    Hello @WmGHamm,

Do you use any of Quicken's Built-In categories, or none at all? Also, if you navigate to Tools > Memorized Payee List, do you see any of your payees saved with Quicken's Built-In categories you don't wish to use assigned to them?

If so, you can right-click to edit them in this list and see if it helps (or if you see more than 1 category entry saved for the same payee, you can delete the item with the undesired category from the list and keep the one you want it to use).

    Hope this helps!

Two more things you can try:

For a global On/Off switch: In Edit / Preferences / Downloaded transactions set or remove the checkmark at "Automatically categorize transactions"

For a setting applicable to a specific Payee Name: Edit this payee's entry in the Memorized Payee List and set the checkmark at "Never auto-categorize this payee …"

Thank you, Anja and UKR. When I went to the Memorized Payee List, I found several dozen entries with two category designations, one of which was a Quicken built in. I deleted the built-in category and left my custom category. I won't know if this fixes the problem until the next time I download my credit card transactions, but I'm certain it will greatly ameliorate the problem. Again, thank you both for taking the time to help me. I am grateful. Happy New Year.
