Citicard transactions downloading to incorrect Quicken file
I maintain 2 Quicken files, one personal, one joint. I have 2 Citicard credit cards, one personal, one joint. Until recently, my personal card downloaded into my personal Quicken file and the joint card downloaded into my joint file. Now, I'm getting both personal and joint Citicard transactions downloading into my personal file, and vice versa. How can I resolve this?

OK. Update in this thread when there are new transactions downloaded.
That Opening Balance dollar amount getting changed is an issue that has been around for at least a year, maybe much longer. We don't know what is causing it but it sometimes (not always) happens when the connection method gets changed, reset or reauthorized. Entering the correct dollar amount into the Memo field is an easy, fast and 1-time proactive step to take so when it does happen it is easy to identify and fix.
Quicken knows about this issue but they have not yet advised what the cause is or if/when a fix is planned. Actually, Quicken rarely tells us when a fix will be coming. We usually just find out about the fix when it is mentioned in the Release Notes of a version update.

Please clarify: You have 2 different Quicken data files with 1 Citi credit card in each data file? Or you have 2 different Citi card accounts in 1 Quicken data file?

I have 2 Quicken data files with 1 Citi credit card in each data file. My one login on the Citi site includes both credit cards. When I activate the credit card account in a Quicken data file, I choose the one card that goes with that file.

Thanks for the clarification. I had to ask because some people confuse "files" with "accounts" so I wanted to make sure I clearly understand what the issue is. Good to know that you have 2 different data files with 1 card in each file.
In late-September Citi made some system changes that greatly affected downloading into Quicken. After all the dust settled in early/mid-October it became apparent that as a result of those changes the EWC+ authorization and downloading setup process was less flexible than it was in the past.
There are a couple of workarounds that some have found helpful in restoring their downloading flexibility:
- One Option: Set up each account using different Citi.com logins. Since one of your accounts is joint, does the other person have their own Citi.com login for that account? If so, try doing Add Account for that joint account card using that other person's Citi.com login.
- Another Option: Citi has multiple Add Account financial institution setup options. Some Citi cards can be downloaded from more than one of those options. If you would tell me which Citi credit cards you have, I can perhaps help you to identify which one(s) might work with them so you can set up one credit card using one Citi financial institution and set up the other credit card using a different Citi financial institution.

What does EWC+ stand for?
Option 1: My husband has his own personal Citi credit card which he manages in his own Quicken file on a separate computer. When he logs into Citi he only sees his card, not the joint card. If he could see both, and I used his login, I would be concerned that he would begin to have the same problem that I am having.
Option 2: All 3 of our cards are Citi Dividend World MasterCards. I also have a joint Costco Citi business VISA on a different login.

EWC+ = Express Web Connect+. It is one of 4 different connection methods used for downloading financials into Quicken. When doing Add Account or Set Up Now Quicken will push you to the financial institution website in your default browser where you will need to log in and authorize the financial institution to download to Quicken (actually, download to Quicken's aggregation partner which is Intuit). Once that is done, the financial institution sends revolving tokens to the aggregator uses when downloading financial data on your behalf. Citi uses this EWC+ connection method although in some cases they also support using the WC (Web Connect) method which is a manual download and import process.
You can read more about the various connection methods in this Support Article:
.Please clarify:
- You have 3 Citi Dividend World MasterCards: Which Quicken financial institution(s) are each of them set up to download from? There are several places you can find this information….Account List in the Financial Institutions column, Online Services tab of Account Details and General tab of Account Details. Please provide the exact specific financial institution name as circled in red in the following picture. (Citi has many different financial institution names so knowing the exact specific one(s) you use for each card is important to know.):
- The 3 Citi Dividend World MasterCards: 1 is yours and 1 is joint, both of which you download. And 1 is your husband's which only he downloads?
- You Costco card: Which financial institution is this card set up to download from?
When you provide the requested information I hope to provide you with a suggestion of how to proceed to resolve the issue you are experiencing.

It is, simply, not possible for Q to "downloading to incorrect Quicken file". Q can ONLY download to an open Q data file.
Clarify what you mean, and if you're talking about the wrong Q account, state such.

NotACPA: I have 2 Quicken files, one for my personal finances and one for joint finances with my husband. I have 2 Citibank credit cards, one for myself and one joint. Up until recently, only my personal card transactions downloaded to my personal Q file and only my joint card downloaded to my joint Q file. Now, both cards are downloading to my personal Q file, all transactions going to my personal Citibank credit card account in Q.

Your husband's card is downloading properly into his file, right? If so, then make no changes to the set up for that.
You have two joint cards you want to download into the Joint file but only one of them is currently doing that, right? If so:
- Enter and save the dollar amount of the Opening Balance transaction into the Memo field. Do this for both accounts.
- Backup your data file.
- For each account: Go to Account Register > upper right Gear icon > Edit Account Details > Online Services tab > Deactivate > OK.
- Add Account > Citibank > Continue > follow the prompts to authorize Citibank to download to Quicken making sure to select only the two joint cards > when prompted make sure to LINK the downloaded data to the correct accounts in the joint file.
- If the account balances are incorrect: Check the Opening Balance transaction dollar amount. If it does not match what you'd entered into the Memo field earlier, change it to match what you'd entered into the Memo field.
- If the account balances are still incorrect: Scroll through the register looking for duplicate transactions. If any are found, delete one and retain the other. If there are any duplicates, they will usually be found within the most recent 90-days window.
For your personal card in your personal file: Follow the same 6 steps shown above for the joint file with two key exceptions.
- Instead of using Citibank in Add Account use the Citi Cards financial institution.
- During the authorization process, be sure to select only your personal card account.
If for some odd reason Citi Cards does not work for your personal card (it should since your husband's card uses Citi Cards), then you can try using Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi as the financial institution, instead. Do not concern yourself that the name is for "Costco" because it works with most Citi-branded credit cards and I suspect it will also work with Citi Dividend World MasterCard.
Let me know how this worked out for you.

I am having a very similar problem with Truist bank. I have two Quicken datafiles, let's say for John and another for Mary. Both files connect to the same user-account at Truist. This single Truist user-account has two checking accounts, let's say Checking A and Checking B. Up until two days ago, my setup allowed for John's Quicken datafile to import only Checking A, and for Mary's Quicken datafile to import only Checking B.
Now, when updating Mary's Quicken datafile, Quicken is doing the following: adding Checking A (supposed to only download to John's Quicken file) to Mary's Quicken datafile; adding a copy of Checking B. In Mary's Quicken datafile, which should only have Checking B, I now see:
- Checking A
- Copy of Checking A as if it's a newly added account to the datafile, with no transaction history
- Checking B
Quicken did all of this without presenting me with the pop-up window that normally allows a user to link bank account data to existing accounts in the Quicken datafile.
I'll not post in this thread here any longer, as I have a separate thread started already. Just wanted to chime in to show this appears to not be isolated to a single bank.

Boatnmaniac:
"You have two joint cards you want to download into the Joint file but only one of them is currently doing that, right? " Actually, both are downloading, the Costco card correctly and the other card with extra transactions from my personal card.
I did this in my personal Q file: Noted zero Opening Balance. Deactivated personal Citi account. Reactivated account using Citi Cards instead of Citibank. Zero balance remained, no transactions downloaded BUT there are none to download at this time for either my personal or the joint Citi Dividend World MasterCard.
I did this in my joint Q file: Noted zero Opening Balances. Deactivated both joint Citi accounts. Reactivated both joint Citi accounts (Citi Dividend World MasterCard and Costco card). Zero balances remained, no transactions downloaded BUT there were none to download at this time.
The real test will come when there are transactions to be downloaded. I will keep you posted.
It is notable to me that you focused on opening balances. In the past, I have had trouble reconciling Citi credit card accounts and, after much sweat, found that the opening balance had somehow been changed to the amount of the discrepancy. What causes that to happen?
Thank you so much for your help!!

There have been a few transactions for the joint card and they have all downloaded to BOTH the joint account AND the personal account.
Logging into Citicard, I see one personal card transaction (January 4) but it does NOT download to EITHER my personal or the joint accounts.
This is a mess!
