credit card payment increases my balance
I looked back to several years of transactions and it is doing it everytime in my discover account.

The problem is that your balance is in an overpayment status. The balance in credit cards should be in red and negative, not black, since a person normally owes money to the credit card company and not the other way around.
You either have some missing charges, duplicate payments or an Opening Balance that is not correct.
Scroll back to when it went from red to black, your issue will be before that point in time most probably.

I found the problem. I had several double payment entries. Thanks for your help!

To help with this in the future, I'd suggest that you turn OFf the Amount column and instead display the Charge and Payment columns.For one, many times the sign is backwards in the Amount column, leading to incorrect balances.
And 2nd, the offset of the Charge and Payment columns makes for an easy visual to spot when something gets duplicated.
Obviously, it's your choice, but simple tips sometimes make life quite a bit easier.
