Roth 401(k) account not listed for after-tax deduction on paycheck: A workaround

Member ✭✭✭

It seems the earlier thread about the issue of Roth 401k accounts not being listed in the after-tax deduction was closed before a resolution. See Roth 401(k) account not listed for after-tax deduction on paycheck — Quicken.

The source of Quicken's confusion may be in that it's unable to distinguish between a 401k and a Roth 401k, when initially creating the "Connected Account", so it treats both types as regular 401ks. If you only see "Account type: 401k or 403(b)" under the Roth 401k's account details, then I'd bet the "Roth" part of "Roth 401k" was dropped when you created the "connected" account.

Here is a simple workaround.
Step 1: create a new offline IRA account. Select the IRA account type - not the 401k type. Go through the rest of the Add Account wizard with the options you want until you get to the second to last page where you can specify the IRA type as Roth IRA. Finish the wizard to create the account.

Step 2: connect the new Roth IRA account to the brokerage. Go to "Edit Account Details", select the Online Services tab, and connect the account to your brokerage services. When asked, link your Roth 401k account from your brokerage to the new Roth IRA account you just created. Viola! You now have a Roth 401k account that will be listed under after-tax deductions of your paycheck and have automatic downloads.
