Ending balance and current balance in account list display includes reminder transactions

Has this always been the case that the ending and current balance displays in the account list include reminders? Is there any setting to have the ending and current balance in the account list display not include reminder transactions? This seems to be occurring only for Investment type accounts.

This issue appears to be related to the problem reported at:

    https://community.quicken.com/discussion/7957960/r60-14-or-lower-show-ending-balance-in-account-bar-now-considers-future-transfers

which needs to be fixed. Reminders should not be part of current or ending balance.

Are there any suggestions by the experts to stop reminders from being added to the Account Bar ending and current balance for investment accounts? This seems to be a bug.

    Hello @leishirsute,

We appreciate you bringing this to our attention, and I apologize for receiving a delayed response as I am just now seeing this post.

I attempted to replicate this issue but was not able to do so. Therefore, I'd like to gather some additional information first to further investigate it.

When did you notice this issue first begin to occur? Was there anything significant that happened prior to the first time you noticed (i.e.: One Step Update, installed new Update Release, etc.)?

What, if any, troubleshooting have you tried so far?

Additionally, can you please confirm where on your computer your data file is located? Do you have it stored in a folder located on your local hard drive (C: Drive), on in a cloud-based/external drive (e.g.: OneDrive, DropBox, USB, etc.)?

    Thank you!

+ After updating to R60.20, but it may have been there before and I just didn't notice.

What, if any, troubleshooting have you tried so far?

+ I've done Validate and SuperValidate

+If I delete all investment Bill and Income Reminders for the account, the ending balance and current balance are correct.

Additionally, can you please confirm where on your computer your data file is located? Do you have it stored in a folder located on your local hard drive (C: Drive), on in a cloud-based/external drive (e.g.: OneDrive, DropBox, USB, etc.)?

+ It is stored on local C drive folder.

I was able to recreate on a test datafile:

1 - Started a new datafile called test.

    2 - Create a dummy investment account.

    3 - Add a scheduled deposit dated for 2/1/2025 for $200.

4 - Exit Quicken and restart it.

4 - The account bar in the test datafile shows an Ending Balance = $200 for the account even though the account has a $0 balance.

I attached the test datafile. Remove the .pdf after saving. Use your own Quicken login to access. Look at the account bar with Ending Balance of $200 even the account register has no transactions. There is one Reminder transaction of $200 which is what is included in the Current and Ending balance. It seems like a bug to me.

I noticed that $200 shows up for Ending and Current Balance in the Account Bar, because the only reminder is overdue.

If you create a scheduled income reminder for $400.00 and date it 3 days from now, the Current balance will be $200 and the Ending Balance will be $600, even though there are no transactions in the register. Quicken is including scheduled reminders in Ending and Current Balance amounts in the Account Bar. This seems wrong. Reminders should not be included in the balances. Current balance should include all register transactions as of today. Ending balance should include current balance + all future dated transactions IN THE REGISTER, not in reminders. Reminders are just that and may never be accepted.

Attached is the datafile with 2 income reminders as described above.

I hope you can show me that there is some setting that tells Quicken not to include Scheduled Reminders in the account bar balance. I haven't located such a setting.

Additional info: The reminders are also included in the Account Balances report which makes the report incorrect regarding current balances.

Thank you for following up and providing detailed information!

Apologies for the delayed response—I’m just now seeing your message from the 4th.

I wasn’t able to open the test file you provided (it’s not allowing me to remove ".PDF" from the file for some reason). However, I just attempted to replicate the issue again after updating to the latest release, but I was still unable to do so.

Since a new staged release is now available, I recommend updating to R61.16 to see if the issue persists. Navigate to Help > Check for Updates and see if you're prompted to install it. If the update isn’t available in-product (since it's a staged release), you can manually download and install it using the link found in this support article.

Let me know how it goes!

I can send the test datafile as an email attachment if there is one you want me to send it to.

Windows should be set to show filename extensions in order to be able to remove the .pdf.

I was able to download the file from my earlier post to my TEMP folder and remove the .pdf extension.

I've reported the issue as a bug. It's very frustrating because ENDING and CURRENT balances for investment accounts are not being reported correctly in the account bar and the Account Balances report when there are investment reminders.

R61.16 is not for all users yet and the issue is not shown as a fixed issue in the release notes.

I'll try to contact support about this.

    UPDATE:

I spoke to support and they escalated this issue to 2nd tier support.

2nd tier support acknowledged that cash accounts have the ability to show no reminders in the account register, while investment accounts do not have the ability and add the reminders to the register regardless. They agreed that this needs to be fixed but it is not considered a bug and needs to be submitted as an idea to the community. SO I will submit an idea to the community.

    Thank you for the update!

I appreciate you confirming this with Tier 2 support. It’s interesting that they consider this expected behavior, especially since I wasn’t able to replicate it on my end. I’ll check internally with my team to gather more insight on this.

In the meantime, submitting it as an idea is a great step, and I hope it gains traction for future improvements.

    Thanks again for following up!

Support shared my screen and saw the issue recreated. The share screen capability was very helpful.

Although I had hoped the issue would be treated as a bug, I was pleased with the support I received.

I am skeptical that it is intentional to include un-entered reminders in investment account current and ending balances.

I have tested in my trusty Q2017 R15 and un-entered reminders are NOT included in account current or ending balance in either the Account Bar or Account List. I tried with a plain investment income reminder categorized to Other Inc and a dividend income reminder.

So apparently this “intentional” feature was added after Q2017. Perhaps we could ask when this feature was added?

I agree. But the powers that be said otherwise and I was poor at convincing them it is a bug.
