Last update added broken transactions to checking account

Quicken Classic Deluxe
Version R61.17
Build 27.1.61.17
After the last update, my checking account running balance shows asterisks. I scrolled back to see what transaction might have been damaged, and I found 2 broken transactions at the top (oldest) of the register. See attachment.
I can edit the transactions to have valid dates, categories, and amounts. But when I click Enter or save, nothing happens, and I can't leave the transaction. I can go back to the homepage, and then into the account again - still locked to that transaction. I can exit Quicken and reopen it, but those 2 transactions are still broken. I tried running Validate. It says changes made, but this doesn't fix these broken transactions. I then opened a backup from before the update, and those 2 broken transactions still show up in my checking account register. I know the issue didn't exist then, so Quicken is adding them after the fact, and I tried 2 different backup files.
What can I do to fix this?

You didn't mention it, but have you tried to delete them? Ctrl+D with the transaction selected.

By any chance is this a "Linked Checking Account" where those transactions originated in a brokerage account?
It's in brokerage accounts were N/A transactions frequently originate.

I did try deleting, and that had no effect. It would prompt me to fix the invalid date in the transaction, but when I fixed that and tried to delete again, nothing further happened - just no more prompts.

It is not linked. I do have online services activated to automatically pull transactions, but it's not otherwise connected to another account/brokerage/etc.

I called Quicken support. They walked me through some troubleshooting to include rolling back the version of Quicken. Nothing helped. Somehow the latest update introduced something that inserts the broken transactions in 2 different accounts. Both are USAA, so it may be related to the QuickConnect mechanism. Regardless, it broke my primary checking account. The final suggestion from Quicken support was to start a new file and rebuild from scratch. At that point I asked for a refund. I had to get to a supervisor, but I finally got my refund. Since I'm starting over anyway, I'm leaving Quicken after 30 years of MS Money and Quicken. If anyone else ends up down this road, I recommend MoneySpire. It has the long range balance projection capabilities that kept me coming back to Quicken when I had looked for alternatives in the past.

I am having this issue too after an update on 2/27/25. I can see the offending transactions back in 2017 but cannot delete it or change it. I also tried to restore from backup from a file that wasw before the update and it has the same asterisk.

If you haven't done so already, please do the following actions:
- Even if you are on the latest software level already, download and install the latest Manual Patch file from https://www.quicken.com/support/update-and-patch-20182019-release-quicken-windows-subscription-product to ensure your Quicken software is up to date and correctly installed.
- Reboot Windows.
- Start Quicken. Do not run One Step Update.
- Run BOTH Validate and Supervalidate to attempt to repair your Quicken data file.
- If nothing helps, try to restore your Quicken data file from an Automatic or Manual backup taken just prior to the problems first occurring.
Validate and Supervalidate instructions
First save a backup file prior to performing these steps
Validate:
• Click File
• Select Validate and Repair File...
• Select Validate File
• If the data file contains investment accounts also select "Rebuild investing lots".
• If you suspect that a damaged Quotes Price History causes your problems, also select "Correct investing price history" functions "Delete" or "Repair and Rebuild".
• Click OK
• Review the Data Log. Anything interesting in there, worthwhile posting here?
• Close Quicken, leave it closed for about 30 secs
• Reopen Quicken and see if the issue persists.Super Validate:
• Click File
• Press and hold both CTRL and Shift keys while you click Validate and Repair File...
• Select Supervalidate File
• Click OK
• Review the Data Log. Anything interesting in there, worthwhile posting here?
• Close Quicken, leave it closed for about 30 secs
• Reopen Quicken and see if the issue persists.0 -
Tried all that and no change. I think the offending data is causing the balance to not calculate correctly. The validate and super validate did some changes but didn't fix the 2 transactions that are so weird and don't even fit the format (e.g. date on one is "255/255/8044" but I can't delete it or change it. I did figure out a way to calculate the balance using the sidebar balance - uncleared transactions so at least I have that. I see a LONG call to Quicken in my future or hopefully others have this and they will fix it in another update. I have backups I can upload but am tired of this problem for now……

It appears that something happened just before, during or immediately after you installed the last Quicken software update. Your Quicken data file was damaged and neither Validate nor Supervalidate are able to repair it.
My suggestion is: Restore your Quicken data file from a backup taken immediately before the software update was installed. If that doesn't resolve the problem, restore the next older backup taken the day before.
That means you'll have to reenter any transactions and other changes you made since that backup was taken, but, at least, you're back to normal with good data.0
