Why are some transactions showing in "Other" on spending report?

Why are some transactions showing under "Other college:Maddy:Rent" instead of in the top section of Rent? They are categorized the same in the actual transactions. The "Schwab joint" account is a brokerage account and the other accounts are checking accounts - could that be the difference? I'd like to find a way to have them all in the same section on the report.

That indicates that you have an entry in the Top Level Category, "College" in this case/

the 6/4/2024 and 8/23/22 transactions both have the same category but they show in separate sections of the report

It looks like a bug or maybe something wrong with your data file (I wasn't able to reproduce it with an entry in an investment account for a misc expense)

What investment "action" did you use to enter the transaction?

Looking at your screenshot, I think your categories are:

    college

    Maddy

    Rent

With no other categories being under Rent.

The way you get an "Other" is if you enter a transaction with a category that has sub/child categories.

For instance, if you entered a transaction with the category of college you would see:

Other college as the entry in the report.

Given that all the shown transactions are in college:Maddy:Rent (and Rent doesn't have any sub/child categories) then there shouldn't be an "Other …" line. If there was a category(s) under the Rent then all of the transactions should have been in an "Other …" line.

Here is an example (which is displayed correctly)

    The categories for above:

Chris - in your brokerage account settings, do you have the "Show cash in a checking account" option set to 'Yes'? Mine was set to "No", and the Quicken chat representative told me to switch it thinking that would solve the issue. I did, but that account has 15+ years of transactions so it's still updating an hour later.

And yes, the Categories are "college", "Maddy" and "Rent"

No, I don't have the set in that brokerage account (don't like the setting), and I would be very wary of using it, especially for this purpose. It is a "virtual checking account" and doesn't always behave the same as a regular checking account.

What "action" were used for entering the transactions in the investment account?

In the brokerage account, the transaction type is "Withdraw", and the category is "college:Maddy:rent"

It is a problem in how Quicken is reporting this.

    Investment account:

    Checking account:

    Report:

Note I changed to MiscExp, but it didn't fix the problem. The problem seems to need a certain combination. As in you do seem to have some of your transactions that are entered in a parent category that does have sub/child categories.

Where Quicken is wrong is it is treating this differently between investment accounts and non-investment accounts. That part seems like bug to me.

On the other hand, I would suggest not putting transactions in a parent category that has sub/child categories.
