Odd or not, Is Quicken for Windows crashing for others?

R61.21 keeps crashing. The downloaded patch will open it but this has been going on for too long.

My installation is stable. If Quicken will not run at all, I would uninstall the existing Quicken program and reinstall it.

If you haven't done so already, please do the following actions:

    1. Even if you are on the latest software level already, download and install the latest Manual Patch file from https://www.quicken.com/support/update-and-patch-20182019-release-quicken-windows-subscription-product to ensure your Quicken software is up to date and correctly installed.
    2. Reboot Windows.
    3. Start Quicken. Do not run One Step Update.
    4. Run BOTH Validate and Supervalidate to attempt to repair your Quicken data file.
    5. If nothing helps, try to restore your Quicken data file from an Automatic or Manual backup taken just prior to the problems first occurring. https://www.quicken.com/support/how-backup-or-restore-your-quicken-data

    Validate and Supervalidate instructions
First save a backup file prior to performing these steps
    Validate:
    • Click File
    • Select Validate and Repair File...
    • Select Validate File
    • If the data file contains investment accounts also select "Rebuild investing lots".
    • If you suspect that a damaged Quotes Price History causes your problems, also select "Correct investing price history" functions "Delete" or "Repair and Rebuild".
    • Click OK
    • Review the Data Log. Anything interesting in there, worthwhile posting here?
    • Close Quicken, leave it closed for about 30 secs
    • Reopen Quicken and see if the issue persists.

    Super Validate:
    • Click File
    • Press and hold both CTRL and Shift keys while you click Validate and Repair File...
    • Select Supervalidate File
    • Click OK
    • Review the Data Log. Anything interesting in there, worthwhile posting here?
    • Close Quicken, leave it closed for about 30 secs
    • Reopen Quicken and see if the issue persists.

    UKR,

When validating, Quicken found a damaged scheduled reminder and removed it. No read errors, all internal consistency checks passed, all security references are within the normal range.

When super validating, the check couldn't be performed because I am backing up to the cloud. Naturally, Quicken won't open again unless I double click on the patch, QW27.1.61.21MPatch.

Went to Edit, Preferences, Mobile and Web, sync was already off.

Super validated a second time, No errors, No read errors, All internal consistency checks passed, All security references are within the normal range.

I closed Quicken, I went to the start menu and on clicked Quicken, the red badge Quicken Classic Deluxe appeared then disappeared and nothing.

    I didn't have any luck with QW27.1.60.15MPatch.

Okay, so I uninstalled Quicken and then downloaded it again. It will not open.

  • Quicken Windows Subscription SuperUser ✭✭✭✭✭

    It will not open.

If Quicken is unable to open the current data file due to the file being damaged, you can try this:

Hold the Control key when you click the Quicken icon & continue holding it until Quicken starts. You then have the File and Help menu options but an otherwise blank screen.
Now select the File Menu / Validate and Repair File. Select the data file giving you problems. Let's see if Quicken can repair the file. If it can't, restore your Quicken data file from a Manual or Automatic Backup taken prior to the problem first occurring, if necessary going back to older backups until you find a file that does not exhibit these symptoms.

I don't know if it is trying to open the data file or not. I was clicking on Quicken from the start menu. The logo lingers briefly then disappears both when I am holding down the control key and not.

So, uninstalling and reinstalling the Quicken file did not assist in using the software.

I guess I know the answer to "When will Quicken finally get it right"

How can I get my subscription fee back?

I have the almost same problem as described above. After installing the normal update 61.21, QW opened my main data file just fine the firsttime, but the second time, it froze halfway thru the process. The beginning background screen displays with the win hourglass and refuses to proceed. Only way to close it is with task manager. This continued for many tries. I have 2 other data files that are much smaller and they open just fine. I contacted support and they walked thru the process of restoring backup files from 3 days prior, 2 weeks prior and end of last year with no result, still hangs. I told the tech that the last time this happened, 2 years ago,(a different tech) sent me a patch file from an earlier version (2-3 versions older) and everything worked perfectly. That tech said to wait a few months before allowing an update so they had time to fix the problem. (which I did) After telling the new tech this he sent me a patch of 60.20 and tried again, same result. He then sent me a much older patch,(44.20) and everything went back to normal. The next day I validated the file (got a similar report as jayh6 above) & tried the 60.20 patch again. It opened normally so I switched to one of the smaller files (opened normally) and back to the main one, which hung again. I then installed patch 46.12 (which I had gotten from the 1st tech) and again, everything is normal. So somewhere between patch 46.12 and 60.20 quicken has broken and without a list of other patches, I don't know exactly when. This seems to be related to working with large QDF files. Mine is getting close to 130MB, (been using quicken for 40 years) but if older versions handle it, a newer should as well.

Just wanted to add that R61.21 has crashed 3 times for me in the last couple of days while saving transactions. Fortunately, there were no erros when I ran Validate.

Yeah, I need this information for my taxes and it does not open, R61.21 patch or not. No refund, no apologies, no communication at all. They don't even try.

    Hello @JayH6,

Thank you for letting us know uninstalling and reinstalling did not correct the issue. You mentioned that you see the splash screen, but nothing happens afterwards. Just in case Quicken has opened, but the program window is hidden, please try the following:

    1. Place the mouse cursor over the Quicken icon in the Start bar.
    2. Right-click on the preview window that appears above the Quicken icon.
    3. Click Maximize

If the program is actually crashing, rather than just being minimized, please try following these steps, from this article on when Quicken crashes after an update:

Try opening Quicken without a data file.

    1. To do this, hold Ctrl + Shift on your keyboard and double-click the Quicken icon.
      • Note: You will need to continue to hold Ctrl + Shift until Quicken opens with a blank screen.
    2. If this occurs, there may be an issue with the data file that's keeping Quicken from opening properly. Follow these steps to Restore a backup file.

Please let me know how it goes!

    Quicken Kristina
