Updating Quicken H&B

Quicken Windows 2017 Member ✭✭

It is almost time to renew my Quicken Home & Business subscription for Windows 11. My current subscription is good for another 2 months but I want to plan ahead. I have Version R61.21, Build 27.1.61.21

What is the earliest dated program (Quicken 2014, Quicken 2015 for example that are available at low prices online) one can buy then have Quicken do an automatic update to the latest program.

Is the Quicken Classic Business & Personal the same as the previously titled Home & Business? Also, what is the difference between the "Classic Business & Personal" offered currently at $8.99/month and the "Quicken Business & Personal" shown at $3.99/month?

Actually, the $3.99/month during Quicken's current sale (March 2025) is a lower price than many of the offerings on eBay at this time.

Thanks for help clarifying a situation that is confusing to me.

"Quicken Business & Personal" is an online-only version of Quicken - it's Quicken Simplifi with business features added, and everything is done on the web.

Quicken Classic Business & Personal is the desktop version of Quicken; AFAIK it's the same as the old Home & Business, they just changed the name.

If you're currently using desktop Quicken Classic you can't port your data over to Simplifi so you'd be starting over from scratch if you switch away from Classic.

You must have Quicken Subscription to download transactions or any other online services.

Note that you can buy this from a retailer, NewEgg,

NewEgg has a special going on right now:

Quicken Classic Business & Personal - 1 Year Subscription (Windows) [Key Card] - Newegg.com

$77.93 with promo code for another $14.94 off.

I'm confused. You have a current Quicken subscription and are looking to renew it… so why are you asking about buying an old version of Quicken? If you were thinking you could buy a cheap version of an old version of Quicken from someone on eBay, and then have it update to the current version, it doesn't work that way; you need to have (and pay for) a current subscription to run the current version of the program.

Quicken moved to subscription pricing in 2017. But several years before that Intuit implemented the Intuit ID for validation. you have to go back to Quicken 2013 — which can be found online for free — for a version which does not require an Intuit ID or Quicken ID. And any of those mid 2010's versions (2014, 2015, 2016) which use an Intuit ID are impossible to install today, because the Intuit servers they logged into no longer exist after Quicken separated from Intuit in 2016. But I don't understand why you have interest in these old versions if you're using a current subscription version and plan to renew it.

In terms of names, Quicken's marketing geniuses keep tinkering with the names of the products, although nothing has actually changed. There used to be Home & Business, and they changed that to Business and Personal. Same thing. Then last year, they added the word "Classic" to help differentiate the legacy desktop applications from their newer cloud-based Quicken Simplifi. And more recently, they introduced another product, Quicken LifeHub. So "Quicken Classic for Windows" is the same as "Quicken for Windows"; it's just a marketing change.

There have been four subscription levels of Quicken Classic: Starter, Deluxe, Premier, and Business & Personal (previously Home & Business). In the latest marketing tweak, they have separated out Business & Personal as if it's a different product. It's not. What's new is that they created a Business & Personal version of the cloud-based Simplifi product. But rather than calling it "Simplifi Deluxe" and "Simplifi Business & Personal", they decided to stick with "Simplifi" and "Business & Personal"; the latter is just Simplifi upgraded to have business features. That's what you're seeing for $3.99/month (compared to regular Simplifi, which sells for $2.99/month). Unless you're looking to move to an entirely web browser based product with all your data in the cloud — and no way to migrate your existing data to it — you can ignore that product. On the desktop products side, the name of the business product is "Quicken Classic Business & Personal for Windows". It's not a new or different product than you've used int he past; it remains the highest subscription level for Quicken Classic.

Clear as mud, right? Every time Quicken Marketing tries to make things cleaner, they seem to make it more (and unnecessarily) complicated. Sigh.

Quicken Classic Business & Personal has a list price of $131.88/year — which is marketed as $10.99/month, even though none of the Quicken products can be bough on a month-by-month basis. It's often on sale from Quicken and sometimes on sale from retailers. Currently, my browser is showing me Quicne is offering it for 18% off, $8.99/month (which is $107.88/year) — but Quicken only discounts to new users. But NewEgg.com currently has it on sale for $77.93, not restricted to new users. You buy it from them, get an activation number, log into your quicken.com account, enter the activation code, and it will add 12 months to your existing subscription. I doubt you'll find it much cheaper anywhere.

Jacobs, Lots of good information there and not actually confusing but a pretty clear explanation of the product lines. I have in the past combined your first and last paragraphs in that I bought an earlier program with "One year subscription. Includes automatic connection to latest up-to-date version" printed at the bottom of the box front. I think I was able at that time not to install the older version but to use the activation code to extend my subscription for another year. That was as an established Quicken user. If that won't work anymore, I will take advantage of the sales you and Chris have suggested.

And Jon's explanation of the Simplifi versions shortcomings for me are very helpful.

    Thanks.

This still works! But the box you buy has to be a version of subscription Quicken. You asked about Quicken 2014 or 2015, and those boxes are from the old Intuit era before subscriptions; they won't have an activation code you can use with current subscription Quicken.
