Let me say one more thing, about the "backup and such".

Say you have a MyData.QDF-Backup file you can make a copy of that and then just rename that to MyTest.QDF and open that, and try this, without touching your original data file or the backup. Then when you are satisfied that everything is OK, then can replace your original data file with this copy.

Note I would probably avoid using both copies for any length of time, because when you do a One Step Update you want to keep only one copy that is properly synced with the online data. But for the local moving of the transactions and running reports and that kind of thing these are things that only affect the individual copies of your data file.

I recommend using just a Windows copy over Quicken's Restore which might contact a Quicken server.

My back up Quicken is done automatically via the cloud.

It's thru Quicken—Not sure if there is a charge for the service

Chris—-I tried your suggestion—-Moved all transactions, over 300 to Fidelity account.

First Quicken did a file validate, then went through it's steps and finished.

Now Vanguard account shows nothing———-And Nothing sent to Fidelity

    Complete Disaster

Restored my data file—-END OF STORY

Just curious if you really ever tried this because it doesn't work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It works fine for me, so I don't know what to tell you, other than just use what works for you.

So, with that, let's end this discussion.

Chris—-I know you were only trying to help me and apologize if I came off as not grateful.

Honestly, I was meticulous in following your steps and checked off "ALL" securities for the move shares.

The Vanguard account had no holdings after the move.

When I opened the Fidelity account there were no entries. I know I selected the correct transfer account.

I have a real mess on my hands because when you use the shares transferred between accounts as I originally did, my gains/losses are now incorrect, and basis of some securities are wrong.

I thought SCHD was the only problem, but there were more that I missed .

Not sure if this reply is to late, but I was told by Vanguard that when you make the change to tell both parties you want to transfer everything "in kind" to retain cost basis etc. it took several days for everything to get transferred and updated once I made the move to Fidelity.

ocman—Appt. with Retina Dr. this morning and now eyes are back to normal after the drops and can reply.

It looks like to also transferred your account to Fidelity. Did you use ":transfer shares out of account" in the register like I did. If so, have you checked the YTD returns to see if they are correct.

My cost basis was retained and total gains/losses for every security is correct. I keep the same portfolios on Yahoo and Morningstar and everthing is in agreement except for the YTD returns.

BTW, I called Quicken support this morning to discuss this issue. I thought maybe they have run into this problem and could shed some light. The girl was clueless and basically had no idea what she was talking about.

She kept putting me on hold to check with her boss. I asked her if I can talk with her boss or a lever 2-3 agent. She said no. I ended the call.

Previously, I posted questions and always got very good replies from Chris, Jim, Q_lurker, and Tom Young.

It's clear that these individuals know quite a bit about Quicken for windows, and more knowledgeable than the Quicken employees.

I'm just curious if you guys receive consulting fees from Quicken (Intuit) or receive some kind of payment for all the work you do and time spent helping us.

Moderators are Quicken employees. Their user names begin with "Quicken"

Super users are volunteers. We are offered free subscriptions and from time to time Quicken themed swag, coffee mugs and such, but not money.

If you think any user provided a useful answer, you can click on "Helpful" at the bottom, and if you are the original poster you can answer Yes to "Did this answer the question?" This feedback adds to users' points, as shown on the Leaders this month section of the Community Home page, but again there is no money involved.

Jim—-I just went back and clicked helpful for all comments. They were all helpful even though I'm still screwed up. Honestly, just never looked at the bottom under QWin Premium subscription or gave any thought about it

I thought about moving my accounts, but I figured that by the time the transfer went through, and I had corrected the problems caused by the transfer that the problem would be fixed. It did however take Vanguard longer than expected.

Malcolm—-That was the final straw when we were getting no response from Vanguard and Quicken. However, there were other reasons why I wanted to fire Vanguard. One main reason was Vanguard doesn't show the previous days gain/loss and percentage change to your portfolio. Fidelity shows this information as soon as you log in. Vanguard has no weekend hours for support. Fidelity has live support 24/7, and I've called them on many occasions. I just find it easier to navigate Fidelity's website than Vanguard.

I found a fix for my issue and my Year to Date Returns are all correct. q_lurker on March 9 wrote a long comment that confused me, but the takeaway was playing with the dates. I only changed the add shares date to 12/31/2024 reading his post. Maybe, I misunderstood the post.

I changed the remove and add dates for each transaction to 12/31/2024. I was still off

Then I changed the dividends, short and long term capital gain distributions all to 12/31/2024

My register is now 100% accurate for YTD and total gains/losses

Ok, just remember that your Fidelity numbers in Quicken for 2024 and 2025 will no longer match Fidelity's statements. You will receive 2025 1099s from Vanguard, not Fidelity, for any dividend received in 2025.

Excellent point—-I use Turbo Tax desktop premier and import from Vanguard and Fidelity

Now, I'm wondering if I'll be able to import from Vanguard since the accounts will be closed

  • Quicken Windows Subscription SuperUser ✭✭✭✭✭

Generally Vanguard keeps zero balance accounts accessible until after the end of the year they were emptied out, but of course you would have to check with them.

Yes, you misunderstood. The takeaway should have been if your are accurate with the Shares Transferred, the Return YTD will not be computed the way you want it. Quicken does not maintain the records in a manner that allows that form of the calculation.

The change the date comment was offered as a proof of my hypothesis step, not as a solution for you.

If done properly, the Move Transactions approach offered by Chris will give you what you seek with a “price” that transactions before March 6, 2025 will be a mixture of both Vanguard account transactions and Fidelity account transactions. You wont be able to easily determine in which account they actually occurred.

  • Quicken Windows Subscription Member ✭✭✭✭

q_Lurker—The date change was the solution. The YTD returns for Fidelity agree with the YTD returns on the Fidelity performance page. Quicken agrees to the dollar with Fidelity on line performance.

Quicken Vanguard register shows YTD Zero returns YTD.

I even spoke with Fidelity and they told me that the performance numbers as of 3/12/2025 include the Vanguard returns.

Honestly, I could not be any happier with how this turned out.

FYY—-I got 2 hours sleep last night working on this all night. I compared every security with the 1/1/2025 Market value vs. MV on 3/12/2025, then added all dividends and Quicken YTD returns as of yesterday were 100% perfect.

Thanks all for your comments, suggestions, and advice.

I have an update to this topic and feel it's important to disclose.

I noted that I had to change the dates to 12/31/2024 for add shares and transfer shares in order to get the correct returns year to date. I had checked most of my ETF's, CEF's, and mutuals and everything looked good.

However, I had over a hundred bonds, CD's, treasuries, and other fixed income and spent yesterday comparing the 1/1/2025 to the 3/14/2025 balances, adding the interest and dividends, and something was wrong.

It took me a while to crack the case! The interest and dividends this year recorded in the portfolio register for Vanguard were not included in the YTD returns. I had to manually delete all the interest and dividend transactions from Vanguard and enter them in the correct Fidelity accounts. This took forever.

I went over every security in the register and my Year to date returns are 100% accurate.

I would have never transferred my accounts if I had any idea it would be this difficult. It was a nightmare, disaster, and probably took a few years off my remaining life.
