Etrade and RSU transactions.

Trying to get the categorization and metadata for the RSU transactions in etrade to be "sane", and not sure the best approach.

When I look in the transactions in the eTrade Account in Quicken (classic, for mac), I see patterns like the following:

  • Date, Type, Security/Payee, Category, Investment Amt, Amount, Balance
  • 5/12/21, payment/deposit, To T-1 233422, Uncategorized, $0, -$142, {balance}
  • 5/12/21, payment/deposit, Olink TID 233422, Uncategorized, $0, $142, {balance}
  • 5/10/21, Sell, {empty}, 0 shares, -$142, $142, {balance}

The RSUs are in a public company, and (bogglehead) I sell immediately in our open windows. This is one such sale event, in three transactions, two positive, one negative. It nets out right… that

My goal is to get the Categories … functional? so I can get the reporting of income to properly acknowledge all this. I can't change the category of the "0 shares"… if I open that I can enter some metadata like number of shares, price, etc

Thank you for any suggestions.

    Hello @zapman449,

    Thanks for reaching out! It sounds like you’re working on organizing your RSU transactions in Quicken, which can sometimes be tricky, especially when trying to manage the categorization and metadata.

    When handling RSU sales and transactions, you’ll want to make sure that each part of the transaction is categorized correctly. Here are a few steps you can take to help with this:

    1. Categorizing RSU Transactions: In the eTrade account, each RSU transaction should ideally have its own category based on the type of event (e.g., income for the RSU grant, capital gains for sales). If you’re unable to directly change the category for the "0 shares" transaction, it’s possible that this is an automatic entry or a placeholder created by the system to balance out the sale.
    2. Modifying Transactions: When you open a transaction, you should be able to enter metadata, including the number of shares, price, etc. If you’re seeing a blank field under "Security/Payee" for certain transactions, make sure that the security is linked correctly in Quicken.
    3. Income Reporting: For the income related to the sale of RSUs, ensure the categories you choose align with how you want the income reported in your tax-related reports (e.g., short-term or long-term capital gains, depending on the holding period). This will help ensure accurate reporting.

    If you’re still having trouble adjusting the categories or metadata, it might help to manually edit some of the entries to better reflect the transaction. You can also ensure that you have the latest updates for Quicken, as some functionality can improve with newer versions.

    If you need more detailed help, feel free to provide more specifics on what’s happening when you try to modify the entries, and I’d be happy to assist further!

    Hope this helps!
