The "Return (%) YTD" numbers are missing / not correct / out of date in Portfolio Views [edited]

On the "Investing" Tab looking at the "Portfolio Performance" view, the Return (%) YTD column percentages are not correct. My understanding is that this data comes from a third party and is imported into Quicken. This has been a problem in prior years but has usually been fixed in late January. However, this year it has not been corrected for 2025 for my version (R62.16) for Windows. Can others please check their calculations and confirm that the percentages appear to be incorrect for you as well?

You are correct that the Return (%) XXX data is downloaded, not calculated.

Are all of your securities wrong, or just some of them?

Please give examples of the securities affected.

    [update]

I checked several Vanguard and Fidelity mutual funds and the Return (%) YTD numbers are all incorrect. For example, VTSAX is down about 10% YTD but Return (%) YTD shows +1.09%.

I compared the Return (%) YTD data to my ROI (%) YTD data for funds that have had no transactions other than reinvested dividends yet this year and it appears that the Return (%) YTD data has not been updated since 2/25/2025. The Return (%) 1-Year data has the same problem. It appears that this problem only affects mutual funds. For the one stock I own, the data matches if I set the date to 4/15, which is out of date but not as badly as the mutual funds.

To demonstrate the problem, set up a Portfolio view that includes the ROI (%) YTD and Return (%) YTD columns. You will observe that the Return (%) YTD column does not change as you change the As of date but the ROI (%) YTD data does change. This is normal and is because the Return (%) data is downloaded from Quicken's quote provider but ROI (%) is calculated from your holdings and transactions.

You will also observe major differences between this data and the ROI (%) YTD data depending on the As of date you select. I found that if I set the date to 2/25/25, the data in the two columns matches for funds that had no transactions over that period. Note that this analysis depends on you having complete price history. If the data is missing or incorrect for 12/31/24 or the date you have selected, the ROI (%) YTD calculation will be incorrect.

Note also that as reported elsewhere, the Return (%) XXX data is missing entirely for ETFs. It would sure be nice if that was fixed also.

I have reported this via Help > Report a problem and I recommend that others who are experiencing this issue do the same. The more reports they get the more likely they are to address this problem.

@Quicken Anja Here are two screenshots that demonstrate the problem. This is a customized Investing > Portfolio view that includes just the columns of interest. For each time period, the ROI (%) numbers are next to the Return (%) numbers to make comparisons easy.

The first screenshot has an As of date of yesterday so it is based on the closing prices for 4/16. Please note the following:

    • For the stock mutual funds, the Return (%) YTD is up but as you can see from the ROI (%) YTD, the funds are all down significantly. The Return (%) YTD numbers are incorrect.
    • The Return (%) YTD data is missing for the ETFs.
    image.png

This screenshot is the same but it has an As of date of 2/25/25. Here:

    • The Return (%) YTD is the same as in the screenshot above, This is correct because this is data for the most recent quote update.
    • The Return (%) YTD is identical to the ROI (%) YTD for all mutual funds except for VFIAX and VBTLX. The other funds all had no transactions other than reinvested dividends during this period. This indicates that the Return (%) YTD data that was downloaded today is actually the data for 2/25. The data is almost two months out of date. That is the main problem being discussed here.

I am happy to help, @pgavon This has been reported several times and eventually they fix it, but then as you noted it breaks again.

I sure wish they could come up with a permanent fix for the out of date data for mutual funds and also the missing data for ETFs. Please be sure to use the Help > Report a Problem link so they know that this bothers a lot of users.

Because the data has been unreliable, I'm afraid many users have given up on this potentially very useful data point.

While we are in the subject, I also wish this data was not shown as N/A for securities in the Watch List that you do not own. Because it does not depend on your transactions, there is no reason Quicken should not display that data. Unlike the other issues discussed here, this is entirely a Quicken problem, not an issue with the quote provider.

    @pgavon

To be sure we are on the same page (so to speak), where in Quicken is the "Portfolio Performance" view you are referring to? Is it an Investing > Portfolio view that you have named and customized to include the Return (%) YTD column?

There are standard views called "Recent Performance" and "Historic Performance" but they do not include the Return (%) YTD column.

@Quicken Anja I checked the data again today 4/19 and it appears that the Return (%) XXX data for mutual funds is now using data from 4/16, only one day out of date given that the markets were closed on 4/18. That is a big improvement. Did someone from Quicken take action with the quote provider on this or did it just start working on its own?

If Quicken addressed this, thanks for the prompt fix, and in any case I hope it stays fixed.

The data for ETFs is still missing, however.

Please leave this discussion open so we can post further updates.

I edited the title to clarify the issue

@Jim_Harman I don't see any notes on the ticket yet so it's possible this likely happened on it's own, but yes, both the ticket and this thread will be kept open.

    Thank you for the updates!

As of today 4/23, the Return (%) YTD is still using data from 4/16, so this issue is not fixed.

Sorry for picking this up sooner. Now that you mention it, I believe that I added the "Return (%) YTD" column for my personalized view as part of the "Portfolio Performance" View of the Investing Tab.

I appreciate your efforts to follow up on this until it is fixed. Thanks!!!
