Why can't I set a tax category for _RlzdGain? When I try to use the drop-down box, it's blank.

    Good question.

The _RlzdGain Category applies to all realized gains, both long and short term. For security sales, Quicken calculates the gain or loss and the tax line item behind the scenes and assigns the gain or loss to Schedule D:LT Gain/Loss - Security or Schedule D:ST Gain/Loss - Security as appropriate. These are used in the Capital Gains and Schedule D reports and the Tax Planner.

If you try to use or otherwise mess with the built-in investing Categories that begin with _underscores, you do so at your own risk. If you want to capture other capital gains, you should create your own Categories and use the appropriate tax line items.

The underscored Categories are available to you :

and can be used in non-Investment Accounts:

but for don't show up properly in reports:

As @Jim_Harman says if you do want to recognize some capital gain outside of an Investment Account - like maybe selling a car for a profit - then create your own custom capital gain Category and use that.
