Memorized Payee List or Ctrl-T crashes my Quicken - Not a Problem until R-63

I am running Quicken Deluxe Classic for Windows with latest version R-63-21. Whenever I click on Memorized Payee List or hit Ctrl-T, Quicken aborts immediately and I get a window to report the error. I decided to roll my program back to R-62-14 and had no problem opening the list and working with it. I have updated back to R-63-21 and have the same problem again.

Thank you for letting us know you're encountering this issue. I tried to replicate it, but I do not encounter the same problem when opening the Memorized Payee List.

To troubleshoot this, please try restarting your computer, if you haven't already done so. If the issue persists, then please try reinstalling the most recent update patch. You can find the instructions and the patch in this article:

I recommend trying one of two things: clearing your entire memorized payee list, or reinstalling quicken. One of them will fix this.

To clear and rebuild your entire Memorized Payee List please do this:
After creating a backup of your Quicken data file …
To rebuild the Memorized Payee List from existing transactions, click Tools, hold down Shift and CTRL, then click Memorized Payee List.

I just tried it on mine, and it only gives me like 68. I have way more. So it must not add all of them. Just some of the recent ones.

No more crashes after rebuild?
I wouldn't worry about the rest of them, if there are any missing. Next time you enter a new register transaction from the data entry line, selecting the payee name should give you a popup selection list consisting of both MPL entries and prior register entries. Saving the transaction should add to the MPL.

Please make sure that the new option "Auto-delete" in the MPL is turned on and set to something like 24 months, to keep the MPL from turning into a landfill, full of unused entries.

I still have the problem that started this thread. If I go back to R-62-14 I can access my Memorized Transactions List with no problems. As soon as I update to R-63-21, Quicken aborts when I try to access that list. Does anybody else have this issue? I can clear and rebuild the list, but before I do that I'd like to know if this is an issue that will be addressed in a future update.

I just went ahead and cleared my Memorized Transactions List (from R-62-14 since I can't access otherwise). I then updated, and still get an abort even with a cleared list.

@Rick_S have you tried doing a data file validate?

File → Validate and Repair File, and then select "Validate File". Review the validate log for errors or messages.

Then, if Quicken still crashes, try a "super validate" by holding Ctrl-Shift while clicking on "Validate and Repair File".

Had done a validation before, and did a super validate just now (thanks for the refresher). Both showed :
QDF: No errors.
QEL: No read errors.
QEL: All internal consistency checks passed.

I then updated to R-63-21 again, and it aborts when I click on Memorized Transactions List. Reverted back to
R-62-14, no problems.

@Rick_S the other troubleshooting step to try if you haven't done so already is to make a copy of your data file using Quicken's copy process. You will need to reactivate online services for all your accounts in the copied data file.

Make a backup of your data file. Also, make backups during this process, just in case you need to go back a step.
Do a Quicken "Copy File" to create a copy of your data file. This process forces a rewrite of code and fixes some file corruption issues. It will also clear out online connection "remnants" for all accounts. Click on File → Copy or Backup File, and select "Create a copy or template", and then click Next.
On the next screen, leave the defaults as is. You can change the new file name and location, if you wish. Click on "Save Copy".
During the copy process, you will be asked to provide a password for the new file. If you don't want a password, hit ESC.
When the process completes, switch over to the new data file (copy).
Reactivate online services for all accounts in the new data file, by using “Add Account” (do not use “Set up now” on the Online Services tab of Account Details) and carefully link to existing accounts in Quicken.

See if that fixes your issue.

Otherwise, the only other suggestion I can think of is to skip R63.21 by waiting until the next version release to upgrade.

If that doesn't resolve the issue, then contacting Quicken Support might be a good idea.

I see I'm not the only person that has problems with the Memorized Payee List since the R-63 updates, which hyped several "Improvements" to the MPL. I have reverted back to R-62-14 and am waiting for an update that addresses the issue.
