Chase auto-reconcile error due to missing pending transactions
There are so many previous discussions about Chase, including links to support posts that can no longer be opened, that I don't know what the most recent state of this problem is
My case is simple: Chase reports the online balance, the same one it displays at the web site, which includes the pending transaction amount, but that pending transaction doesn't download to Quicken, so the auto-reconciliation fails.
People have debated where the blame lies, and there's a valid case to be made that if the pending transaction were to download, what happens if that pending transaction is later deleted or changed before it finally posts? How would Quicken handle that?
But I can observe the following: At empower.com (Personal Capital), the pending transaction IS downloaded - and marked as Pending, or indicated with italics, and it can't be edited or recategorized, etc. I don't know or recall what aggregator Empower is using. I suppose if it is screenscraping, though, that would explain it. If it's using an API, then it means Citi is presenting the pending transactions to it.
(Either way, though, there is no real consequence if a tool like Empower displays a pending transaction that might later change or disappear, because there is no transaction matching and or reconciliation involved. Transactions are just a list, and lists can change; balances are separate. It would be more involved with Quicken.)
If someone can point to me to the latest and perhaps final word on this Chase/Quicken situation, I would appreciate it!

Hello @qudtp,
Thank you for reaching out to the Community with this issue. I have Chase accounts connected in my Quicken, and rarely see issues with pending transactions being included in the online balance Chase provides to Quicken. While it was a known issue in the past, it has been resolved and should not be an issue currently.
What kind of account(s) is this happening with (checking, savings, credit card, loan, etc.)? When did you first notice the issue? Is this impacting all of your Chase accounts? Is this impacting any accounts with other financial institutions? I noticed that you mentioned Citi, but it's unclear if you're having a problem with that financial institution.
Typically, there are two work arounds for when pending transactions reflect in your online balance in Quicken. The first is to wait until all pending transactions are posted prior to reconciling.
If the account is too active for that to be a viable option, the other work around is to reconcile against the statement balance rather than the online balance. Doing that allows you to bypass the problem by manually filling in the balance without pending transactions.
I look forward to your response!

It's a Chase credit card, which is the only account I have at Chase which is in active use. But I do download to Quicken every day, and every transaction is pending first at credit card institutions, so I may encounter this again. I'm going to check chase.com before downloading each time, to see if this recurs.
At the moment, I can see how Fidelity (Elan) is handing pending transactions: they omit them from the current balance, so the balance at the Fidelity and Elan web sites match the one in Quicken, and Quicken doesn't show the pending transaction. So, everything checks out with that institution.
It looks like a typo, where I wrote Citi but certainly meant Chase.
I am having an unrelated issue with my Citi card, and if it continues I'll start a new thread or open a support ticket.
And I've also reported an issue where the transaction statuses were cleared before I was given the opportunity to review the merges. If that recurs, I'll start a support request for that too.
Thanks!

I created a bunch of credit and debit card transactions at different institutions this weekend, all of them are pending, and the balances presented by Chase and the others are properly not including them.
So, everything seems to be working properly - maybe I had downloaded right while Chase was updating its accounts.
Seems like we can close this thread.
Thanks!
