Pumpkin pie or Pecan?

With Thanksgiving coming soon, it brings to mind traditional Thanksgiving foods. Given the choice, I prefer Pecan pie to Pumpkin. Both are good, but Pecan pie tends to be richer, which makes it feel more satisfying.

I'd love to hear which you prefer!

I have to admit, I’m not a huge fan of either pumpkin or pecan pie… but if there’s cherry pie on the table, you can bet I’m first in line! 🍒🥧

Thanksgiving desserts are always a tough choice, though.

Neither one is really my favorite but I'd probably go with pumpkin first. If I went back for seconds, pecan.

Fruits tend to be my favorite - blueberry, blackberry, apple.

No sweet potato pie? Similar, and beats out Pumpkin (although I don't mind either.)

Persimmon Pudding is also popular for the Holidays here. Old timey, but good. There is actually a guy fetching some with a flashlight in the field across the street from my house as I type this. I think I need to tell him to come back during daylight-I have been watching people get those persimmons for 30+ years. Nobody minds, other than the deer.

Sugar Cream Pie is also another good, simple Holiday pie I often bake-Hoosiers like that and easy to make. Probably one of my favorite pies.

If pecan and pumpkin are the only choices, I'm definitely going with pecan. But really, the only pie I ever look forward to is my grandma's sugar pie.

Sadly, she is no longer with us. Since her passing, I have tried endlessly to recreate it, and have yet to do it the way she could. I am determined to get it right eventually.

I wonder if this is the sugar cream pie @John_in_NC mentioned. If so, I welcome any tips on perfecting this pie! 😁

I m not a fan of either and have not had them in maybe 20 years. Chocolate mousse and angel food cake with mixed berries are probably the only desserts I eat.

@BK Chocolate mousse sounds FANTASTIC right now! A childhood favorite for me, but I'm also very particular with it. If it's not light and airy, then I'm not much of a fan.

I fixed a desert > dessert typo - lol. On on angle food cake with variety of berries, I like combination of fresh and frozen ones. For example the frozen strawberries when thawed and so juicy, the cake will absorb those juices like a sponge - yum.

Ooooo…. You know I almost said chocolate mousse. That is definitely a good one as well. I don't usually see that one at our family gatherings until closer to Christmas time.

Not a fan of pecan pie at all.

My favorite pie for Thanksgiving is Pumpkin, but Apple pie is also on my menu.

Unlike many people, I don't like my pumpkin or apple pie warm. Room temperature is better, but refrigerator temperature is best.

I'm also not a fan of toppings. If I get a slice with ice cream or whipped cream, that gets eaten first, then the pie so I prefer seperate plates.

"Sugar Pie" would indeed be similar as they are all regional variation on a theme of a custard pie. Most differences are based on thickeners (corn starch versus flour), egg requirement, brown sugar or maple syrup, etc. But, all are good. I prefer going the Indiana route for simplicity.

My older generations were French Canadian, so I also remember my Grandmother making similar.

I believe the Indiana version of the pie is the one my grandmother used to make, as her family was from there.

I have never met another person who even knew what sugar pie was! Then again, I can't say I have discussed pie with many people I encounter. 😄

Pecan Pie for me, second would be Lemon-Meringue 😋 I only know that wild, native persimmons here are very BITTER if eaten green! Tricky to pick them. Really they recommend you let them fall naturally off the tree. That way they're nice and ripe, but get to them before the critters! Us neighbor boys back in the day use to joke. If your girlfriend refuses to give you a kiss, toss her a green persimmon, saying they taste great, watch her reaction if she gives it a bite, then RUN; but she'll definitely 'pucker up' good for ya' 😉🤣

Yes, unripe persimmons are quite vile. Usually, folks pick them after the first few frosts and they fall down. But, we haven't had any frosts. Perhaps that is why I see people collecting them, but none of the critters eating them. (I have a lot of wildlife around me, but haven't seen any deer under that tree-I guess they, too, are waiting. :-)

I love lemon meringue as well, but usually associate that more with spring holidays-like rhubarb pies.

But, heck, eat what you want if you are in the mood for it! :-) It's all good.

As far as Pecan Pie goes there's a story to tell..

Many years ago I learned the correct pronunciation for that pie. When I ordered a piece of Pecan pie I was told by my business associate at the table.

"If you continue to pronounce it like that, they are going to bring you peas-in-a-can".

@Pedro504 You actually weren't wrong after all-pronunciation depends on regional dialects. :-) You just happened to be saying it the Southern way where we say "Pee Can" pie. Hence your coworkers jokes. They were the ones who didn't get it. :-)

If you say "Pih KAHN" which is 100% fine in some parts, it will typically get you viewed as an uppity snob by Southerners. P Can is perfectly fine depending on where you live, as is Pih Cahn.

And the pie is good regardless of how you say it.

As we get closer to this holiday, i'll jump start this thread. We discussed desserts, but what about main course? I ask because I personally never felt required to have a "set" food for any particular holiday.

A whole turkey, while nice, is a bit much for my situation. (I can always enjoy some from others.) Some years I have done turkey necks and beans, but those sadly became trendy and now it is hard to justify $8/# for when the whole turkey is a fraction of that.

Beef is rather high now, but always a tasty fallback. Ham is always a good second option as well, if you eat pork. A good chicken has served me well. Some might not eat meat, and others might simply want pizza. It's all good.

So, what's on your menu?

I'll probably make a variation on my Dad's Spanish rice recipe, since it's different enough from the normal to be special, but is also simple enough to be idiot proof.

Tenderloins are our holiday tradition - beef, pork and this year turkey. I brine the turkey tenderloin first (to make it juicy) and then dry rub marinate it over night. Once cooked, slice 1.5" thick medallions and serve it with spicy cranberry sauce - yum.

Interesting, @BK I have never seen turkey tenderloins marketed locally, and that appears to be just what I would want if available: Just enough turkey to sate my turkey appetite and no carcass, mountains of meat to contend with for the next few weeks, etc. A whole turkey is great only if you have enough mouths to feed.

@Quicken Kristina Do you turn the Spanish Rice into a main course? That sounds interesting.

@John_in_NC , I have not seen it in my local stores but I can order it from butcher shops and Bristol Farms (if you have that store). Food Network's "The Kitchen" show recently had an interesting recipe (best if you can watch that episode):
