Invoicing only allows income and not expenses

I am trying to use invoicing for my accounts receivable, and I use a split, so my invoices include expenses. However, when I try to create an invoice and add items, it only lets me link my items to my income. I'm really annoyed by all this. And I'm not looking for a workaround; that implies this software isn't doing what it's supposed to do.
