"Adjusting transactions" out of nowhere on Discover bank accounts

I can only guess that these appeared, somehow, as a result of the changes to Discover Bank connect methods, but I suddenly have transactions that I did not enter, with a payee of "Adjusting Transaction" and a memo of "Adjustment to offset newly-downloaded items before this date", mostly dated years ago, the day before the opening balance on my Discover (at least) CD accounts.

They are making my balance incorrect. Yes, I can void or delete them - but why were they inserted? They didn't appear in the "downloaded transactions" pane - they were put into the register.

Anyone else get these?

@Quicken Kristina It happened sometime after I reauthorized, but I don't know when - they're at the top of the register so I didn't see them until I reconciled today. I have voided them but noted the amounts - I don't yet know if they'll reappear, but I doubt it.

@Cyberphile (don't know why it's not tagging you!) - I'm on R65.29 (I need to update my signature line) so it's not from a change in R66.11.

I see the same thing. It is taking my balance as of the date I reauthorized Discover and assuming that was the opening balance 20 years ago. On top of it, that transaction can't be modified/deleted, so my balances are all skewed. Hoping for a fix soon!

@AlfredBones I was able to edit and void the transaction (didn't want to delete it in case it turned out to be important, for some reason).

I just noticed I also have adjusting entries in three Discover savings accounts. Frustrating, as it has thrown off the balance by the amount of the entry, same as @EmKay above. However…I also have a fourth Discover account in my husband's name and his account has NOT received an "Adjusting Transaction". The plot thickens.

Quicken, is there a plan to resolve this issue? Or should I just edit and void the transactions like others have done?

I'm glad to hear that you were able to edit and void the transaction to correct the issue. Did the manual correction fix the problem, or did the adjusting entries reappear the next time you ran One Step Update?

I had the same thing on two of my three Discover savings accounts. I couldn't delete them but was able to edit the amounts to 0.00 to balance my accounts. My Discover checking account and the third savings were not affected. The amounts were different in the two accounts affected. The randomness of it bothers me as much as anything. Why can't these entries be deleted? Both of my entries were dated the day before the accounts were opened, which was over ten years ago.

Yes! I get the same thing - I have one dated January 31, 1991(!), around the time of my first Discover entry in Quicken, and another dated March 30, 2026, the date I reauthorized my Discover account. They are both for the same large amount, neither one matches any payments or transactions, and they are both additions, so they don't cancel out. If they were real, I wouldn't have to make another payment for a year!

I was able to delete them, but sure would like to know why they were added…

It is possible that the reason you saw those transactions was because of an change made in R66.11. According to the release notes, an adjustment transaction will be added instead of changing the opening balance.

It only happened once so far. The problem is that the adjustment transaction amounts make no sense, and there were two of them, for the same large amount, both positive, adding many zeros to my account balance. The first one predated the opening balance, in 1991, so even though it wasn't labeled "Opening Balance Adjustment," it did indeed adjust the opening balance. The second one, for the same amount, was the same date as when I opened quicken and did an online update (I don't know if either of those triggered the amounts).

I don't understand what an "account connection migration" is, but I was asked to reauthorize my Discover card account (is reauthorization the same thing as account connection migration?). How is the amount of the adjustment determined?

Yes. The reauthorization prompt is to migrate the account from an Express Web Connect (EWC) connection type to an Express Web Connect Plus (EWC+) connection type. Financial institutions have been converting to EWC+ because they consider it more secure.

How is the amount of the adjustment determined?

The release notes don't specify, but I would expect the adjustments should be based on the difference between the balance in Quicken and the balance being reported by the financial institution.

It is strange that you would have two wildly incorrect balance adjustments appear. If you want to troubleshoot further, I can recommend further troubleshooting steps, however, since the issue hasn't reoccurred, we won't have a way to know if that troubleshooting worked.

Typically, I see that there is no reply from Quicken support regarding this issue. It is a serious problem, especially if you don't notice the bogus entry!

FYI… I have not made any changes, updates, etc. … this problem just appeared and luckily it caught my attention while searching for a specific charge in my Citibank Visa account.

Quicken should apply this erroneous charge to the Quicken $77.88 yearly fee that they charge us in the next update !!! :-)

The most likely cause for the adjusting transaction is if the account was added, reconnected, or reset after version R66.11. The release notes (sync and connectivity section) indicate this is a recent change:

How did you try to contact Quicken Support? Did you try by phone or by chat?

After OSU, I had a CC-901 for Citibank. It required a reauthorization. It has 2 checking, a savings, and a credit card.

When I reauthorized, the website said "success" and Quicken loaded the accounts. Normally, it shows the accounts so you can verify the bank is connecting to the correct respective account. This time is showed the accounts, said they were active, and below them, it showed the same accounts and said they were no longer linked. There was no option to edit anything.

I started to run OSU again, but Citibank wasn't shown in the institution list. I found that none of the 4 accounts were activated. I edited one account and started activation. This time, the process showed the accounts and linking to Quicken with the option to edit the linking if wrong.

I started OSU again. Citibank was now listed, and all institutions updated. When I looked at the Citibank credit card, it had the Adjusting Transaction. It made my running balance wrong, so I deleted it. The amount didn't seem to match anything. I've had this same strange scenario occur with Citibank around a week ago and had to delete the adjusting transaction.

In the past, Quicken has changed the account's opening balance with no indication. To make it easier to tell if Quicken has changed it, I've added the opening balance amount to its memo field.
