Can QIF imports automatically use Memorized Payees / Categories instead of importing blank categorie

Hi,

We are importing transactions into Quicken using QIF files. The import itself works correctly, but all imported transactions come in with blank categories.

We would like to know:

1. Is there a setting that allows QIF imports to automatically use existing Memorized Payees / Memorized Categories during import?
2. Can Quicken automatically assign categories based on the Payee when importing a QIF file?
3. If this is not supported, what is the recommended method to automatically populate categories during QIF import?

We need to avoid importing transactions with blank categories.

Short answer is no. When Quicken went to the subscription model in 2018, they dumbed down QIF imports such that they are only jammed into the register to the point that the running balance shown in the Account Bar for the account is not updated until something causes a screen refresh. I always mark at least one of the new QIF imports as reconciled to cause a refresh of the Account Bar.

Now, if you want categorization of the import done based on Renaming Rules, look into QuicknPerlQiz's ImportQIF. It will take your import file, scan it based on your renaming choices and do renaming, recategorization and anti-duplication creating a QIF file for import. Now, all of this is done in ImportQIF and does not change how Quicken deals with a QIF file.

I use it for all of my non-QFX imports and it works great.

The only thing I have found that Quicken helps when importing a QIF file is transfer detection suggestions. As an example, my Discover Card is a CSV→QIF import via ImportQIF. When I enter the payment in checking, I leave the category blank, so it is not considered a transfer yet. When the payment shows up in the QIF import after ImportQIF has renamed it (if needed) and changed the category to [CHECKING], Quicken will ask if this transaction is a match to the uncategorized payment transaction in checking and I answer yes. If I make the manually entered checking payment a transfer, Quicken does not try to do the match, enters the transaction in the CC and creates a transfer in checking and then I have two transactions in each account which is a duplication.
