I've used Quicken for years. Today I cannot open my data file. I don't know of any changes that would cause this. What should I do?
Which edition of Quicken are you using….Starter, Deluxe, Premier or Business & Personal?
What is the status of your subscription?
What version of Quicken do you have installed?
All of this information can be obtained from Help > About Quicken.
Premier, I think. Unfortunately I can't run Quicken to do Help > About Quicken — I just get the "Quicken cannot open" error. My subscription should be current, but I tried logging in at quicken.com and it just says "It looks like you have not synced your accounts yet." But it doesn't let me do anything to fix it.
I never had a problem before, with running Quicken or logging in at quicken.com. It worked just fine the last time I ran it, maybe a week ago. No idea what went wrong.
How are you attempting to open that file? Are you clicking on the Q program icon, and expecting the last used file to open?
OR, are you clicking on a Q data file icon? If this, what's the FULL path to that file … starting with the drive letter?
What's the entire error message that you're getting?
Also, do you have recent file backups that you can get to? You might try changing the name of such backup to remove any date-stamp (if you use that feature with backups) and the ""-backup" extension from the .QDF and then clicking on that to open it. If this works, use Win to delete or rename the prior file and move this re-constituted file to where the prior file resided.
When you launch Quicken and are you prompted to enter the data file password? If so, instead of entering the PW, click on Cancel. That will close that prompt popup and then you should be able click on the Help menu at the top left of the view and then to click on About Quicken.
Also, when tried loggin into your account at Quicken.com, that message makes me think you might have logged into Quicken on the Web, not into to Quicken.com. That is a message that one gets when the data file has not been set up to sync with Quicken on the Web or Quicken Mobile. You will not get that message when you log into Quicken.com. After clicking on Sign in, make sure you click on My Account and not on Classic. Then you should be able to click on Subscriptions and there you will see the edition of Quicken you are subscribed to and the status of of your subscription.
Also, did this happen after you had updated the version of Quicken?
Have you tried rebooting your computer?
Have you tried restoring a recent backup file?
Hello @garyfritzz,
Thank you for letting us know you're encountering this issue. To clarify, when you see that "it looks like you have not synced your accounts yet" message, is this what you see?
If it is, you should be able to click your profile icon in the lower-left to switch between files. If any are synced, you should be able to view the synced data once you switch to that file.
If you're trying to view your account information (to confirm subscription status, etc.), then you should be able to use the "Go to My Account" link to get there.
I hope this helps!
Sorry for the lousy formatting. I can't get it to quote/unquote blocks properly …> When you launch Quicken and are you prompted to enter the data file password?

No, it just gives the "Quicken cannot open data file" error. When I click "no, I don't want to copy the file," it just closes.

Yes, that did the trick! I can log into quicken.com now. I have Quicken Deluxe btw, and my subscription is current through May 20 2027.
> How are you attempting to open that file? Are you clicking on the Q program icon, and expecting the last used file to open? That's my usual method, yes. I also tried opening the .qdf file — no improvement. The full path to the file is C:\Users\fritz\Stuff\Data\Gary.QDF> What's the entire error message that you're getting? I get a dialog that says "Quicken cannot open data file because it is read-only or you do not have permission. Do you want to copy it to a different location and open it from there?" If I say No, Quicken exits. If I say Yes, and give it a location to restore to, it says "Unable to access the drive in disk C:. Please make sure the drive is ready and the disk is not write-protected." > Also, did this happen after you had updated the version of Quicken? Not sure -- not that I'm aware. But since my subscription was apparently renewed a few weeks ago, maybe I got updated then? >Have you tried rebooting your computer? Yes. No improvement.> Have you tried restoring a recent backup file? Unfortunately life has been insane lately and I got careless with my backups. I thought I should be able to restore to one of Quicken's automatic backups, but I have to open Quicken to access them -- and I can't.

Hello,
Thank you for following up!
First thing I would suggest is moving your data file to the default location. That location is C:/Users/username/Documents/Quicken. Once you have moved it here, double-click on it and try to open it. Do you still get the same error message?
The second thing I wanted to mention is that you can access your Automatic Backups outside of the software. You would navigate to C:/Users/username/Documents/Quicken/BACKUP. Do you see any viable backups here? Make sure to check the dates and choose a recent one if this is the route you end up going.
Let us know how it goes!
Thanks Alyssa,
I actually don't HAVE a C:\Users\fritz\Documents folder. I suspect much of this mess is caused by Windows ""helping"" me by moving stuff to OneDrive without my knowledge or permission. For some reason it's moved my data under C:\Users\garyf, while still leaving the original C:\Users\fritz folder structure. Just to add excitement, it keeps insisting I need admin permission to write new files under the C:\Users\fritz folder that I've used for years, and it "encourages" me to write it under C:\Users\garyf instead. So I have data splattered all over. It's a mess.
The Quicken folder doesn't exist under C:\Users\garyf\Documents, so I created it. I copied the most current QDF file there (dated 5/25/26) and it opened just fine. Then I tried to copy it to C:\Users\fritz\Stuff\Data\Quicken, where I've stored Quicken data for many years, and now it insists I need admin permission. Do you think it's safe to store the QDF file there?
If I search for BACKUP, I find copies all over:
C:\Users\fritz\Stuff\Data ## Not sure how it got here, but it's empty C:\Users\fritz\Stuff\Data\Quicken ## This is where I've stored Quicken data for years C:\Users\fritz\Stuff\Data\Quicken\BACKUP ## Don't ask me why there's a BACKUP inside the BACKUP folder! C:\Users\fritz\Stuff\Data\Quicken\JointFiles ## Ancient history, last touched 7 years ago C:\Users\garyf\Downloads C:\Users\garyf\OneDrive\Desktop C:\Users\garyf\OneDrive\Documents\Quicken
There ARE backup files in various places. The most recent is 4/25/2026 — not ideal but I can work with it if I have to, but I'd rather use the QDF file dated 5/25/26. C:\Users\garyf\OneDrive\Desktop\BACKUP\Gary-R-66.28-2026-04-27.QDF-backup
There are no backups under C:\Users\garyf\Documents\Quicken\BACKUP or C:\Users\garyf\OneDrive\Documents\Quicken\BACKUP. The recent automatic backups are under C:\Users\garyf\OneDrive\Desktop\BACKUP.
How would you suggest I clean up this OneDrive disaster, and how should I proceed? I'd like to use the 5/25 QDF file but that only seems to work in the OneDrive folder. Or do I need to restore to the 4/25 backup? Should I do any prep or cleanup before restoring it?
Thank you !! Gary
