Can I safely delete old Backup Files?

Question

Can I safely delete old Backup Files stored on my laptop? I have complete Backup Files dating back to 2022 and they are quite large since I've been using Quickens since last century!  I'm having disk space issues and thought deleting some would be helpful (Backup folder is >300 GB.

Does it make any sense to delete all but the final one for each year: 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025? Or maybe just keep all files in 2026?

I'm running Quicken Classic Deluxe R67.10 on Asus Laptop w Windows 11 Enterprise

I use an approach comparable to that of @splasher

But, unless you've been informed by the IRS that you're subject to an audit … even the year-end (for tax purposes) files only need to cover the prior 7 tax (usually calendar) years.

I always keep the backup of the file that I used for taxes.  Past that you only need the last few months and that is to recover if your data file suddenly becomes corrupted.

Now personally, I'm a data packrat with a large NAS diskdrive, so I've also got annuals back to 1996, monthlys for the last few years and everything for the last 6 months.

Yes, it is generally safe to delete older Quicken backup files if you no longer need them for long-term recovery.

Backup files are mainly there in case you need to restore your data from a specific point in time. If your current file is working correctly and you don’t need to go back several years, keeping every backup going back to 2022 is usually unnecessary.

A common approach is to keep:

* A few recent backups (for example, the last 5–10)
* Or one per year if you prefer having historical restore points

If you’re running into disk space issues, trimming older backups is a reasonable way to free up space, especially since they can accumulate quickly over time.

Just make sure you’re comfortable with the tradeoff. Once deleted, those specific restore points can’t be recovered unless you have another copy stored elsewhere.
