Error adding credit transaction and assigned it to a category.

Question

I have a few categories that are not working as of 7.19.26 (update today).  Example, I have been using category “Auto:Fuel” for ages.  As of today, it prompts for New Category (note the payee is memorized and auto-fills with the Auto:Fuel category). Then at the New Category prompt if I click Save it says “You cannot assign the category to the category group”.  I click OK then have to save the transaction to just “Auto” without a sub-category.

This has just happened to a few other sub-categories but not all.  It just happened after today's update.

I logged out and back in and the error persist.

Please help.

Did this start happening right after updating the version of your Quicken installation?

If so, then it might be that the installation process did not complete properly……an issue that appears (at least to me) to have been a little more common with the R68.XX versions.

The good news is it does not really adversely affect the data file.  It just adversely affects how the data file is viewed or interacted with in Quicken.

The fix generally is fairly simple:  Go to

and download and install the Manual Patch Update file.  It can be installed directly over your current installation.

Note:  The current Manual Patch update file is for R68.28.  The latest R68.31 version is not yet posted there.  So if you do decide to install R68.28 you will likely at some point be prompted to update to R68.31, again.  You can change your Windows UAC Setting to "Always Notify" so when Quicken tries to automatically update the version of your installation you will get a Windows popup asking if you want this to happen.  If you opt to not let it happen then Quicken will not install the new version at that time.  Here is what the Windows UAC Settings looks like:

This MIGHT be a symptom of a corrupted Q data file.

SO, take a backup (just in case) and then click FILE, Validate and Repair file, check "Validate file" and click OK.
