I have been a user of Quicken since the DOS days and had been generally happy with it for many years.
Recent times have become much different, though. Quicken now is riddled with quirks and bugs that are highly annoying, making me wish desperately that there was an equivalent substitute. Unfortunately, Quicken has its position so cemented nobody else can compete. That would not be so bad if not for all the new quirks that are developing with no apparent resolution.
There are several notable ones, but probably the most annoying one I've been experiencing for some time now is a bug related to history. When entering transactions, as I enter the payee, the list of memorized transactions that match as I enter will pop up as usual. What's different now is the categories are not coming in correctly. Assume there are multiple entries for a payee, some with splits or different categories. When you select one of the memorized transactions, the categories do not enter correctly with the transaction. This has necessitated that when I have a regularly occurring transaction with splits, I have to copy the previous transaction from the prior month and then paste it into the new transaction. The splits would not come in if trying to paste it just from the memorized transactions.
Other quirky behavior with cash balances on online accounts has it always trying to make a cash adjustment, even when the cash balance matches what was reported by the institution. Creates a placeholder that I then have to delete.
Quirky behavior in the display, very poor and errant handling of securities mergers, can't get rid of all the expired Puts and Calls in the holdings summary, and numerous other things have made using Quicken much less easy to use. If I were a new user to Quicken, I can't imagine the frustration I'd have not knowing what the heck Quicken just did to me when it mishandled something or one of these quirks occurred.
I sure hope somebody gets a handle on this quality problem soon and restores Quicken to the quality tool it used to be.
