Do Five Digit Check Numbers Download Correctly for You?

Do your checks have five digit check numbers?

If they do, AND all five digits are printed in the line at the bottom of your checks, could you please let me know whether all the digits download correctly into Quicken, and from what institution?

I'm on Fidelity and just reached check #10000. But only four digits download, so check #10012 downloads as 12 even though the number 010012 is printed in the MICR at the bottom of the check.

Before I try to find someone at Fidelity to talk to, I'd like to find out whether this works at any other institution.

I have no idea what the max quantity of check number digits are that Quicken can accommodate but I believe it is at least 12. I know my BBVA and PNC checking accounts download 6 digits.

If only 4 digits are being entered into your checking account from Fidelity my assumption is that 4 digits is all that Fidelity is including in their downloaded data. Of course, it is possible that Quicken is truncating the quantity of digits but I think that is unlikely.

Contacting Fidelity would be a good place to start since they have a tech team that provides support for Quicken and Intuit (their aggregator) so they quite possibly will be able to look into the matter and let you know if their system is limiting the quantity of check number digits and what they can/will do regarding that.

If that doesn't help get the issue resolved you could report this issue to Quicken via Help > Report a Problem and/or Quicken Support (https://www.quicken.com/support/search-opt).

BTW, after sending a "Report a problem" you should follow up with a call to Quicken Support on the phone during posted hours of operation and request help. Let them do a screen share session with you to review the situation on your computer, to determine the nature of the problem and to figure out how to fix it.
If you don't call Support, your problem report will not be acted upon

Thanks for the pointer. That doesn't seem related to my issue, but we have a B of A checking account so I might comment on it.

Edit: And I'm 99% sure the problem is in Fidelity's feed, but I wanted to gather some examples of 5+ digits working from other institutions before talking to them, so if they try pointing the finger I can - er - deal with it.

Please do comment on this, to give the programmers more information. This might be an issue impacting more than just one or two banks if the same code is shared by many.

P.S., I just received a company's check which used a 7-digit check number. Looks like the sky is the limit…

I have neen into five-digit check numbers for about 10 years. I'm running Quicken Premier Classic on Windows 11 Home. My checking account is at US Bank.

Let's say the true check number, as printed in the upper-right corner of the check, is 12345. If you look at the encoded check number on the bottom line of your check, (at least for me) that number is 2345. The bank accounts online and in your monthly paper statement will show the check number as 2345. One Step Update will return check 2345 to me as a downloaded transaction. For the last several years, Quicken apparently uses the last four digits of a longer check number. It will declare a match of the downloaded 2345 to the 12345 I entered in the register when I issued the check, and the 12345 check I entered will be marked as cleared. So, it is handling this situation correctly.

Thanks, @Ray Cosner . Looks like except for the upper right corner, US Bank only uses 4 digit check numbers. The 4 digit encoded number determines how the check is read when deposited, and that determines what Quicken downloads.

My checks have six numbers encoded at the bottom. I'm guessing Fidelity only sends four to Quicken.

I mailed out a couple of checks last week and will watch to see if Quicken can match my register's check 10012 to Fidelity's check 12.

check your statement from Fidelity, I have the same problem with Chase. For personal checking the chase system only keeps 4 digit check numbers. I have to manually match the downloaded checks.

Good pointer. The statement also shows only 4 digits.

So it's definitely Fidelity, and probably something they're not going to fix.
