Upgrading from Quicken 2007 on Macbook pro

I using Quicken 2007 on a Macbook Pro OS X Yosemite. I am wondering what is the latest version of Quicken I can easily upgrade to. I still want to keep this on my hard drive and not a cloud

The last officially supported version was Sierra.

Quicken says 2007 is not compatible with High Sierra, so I cannot guarantee success with it. Many people have been using it with High Sierra, though. Your milage may vary.

I think I was not clear.  I want to upgrade my Quicken 2007 and am staying on Yosemite. What later version of Quicken can I go with ease directly to from Quicken 2007?

Sorry. 2017 for Mac is the latest version to run under Yosemite.

That is if you can find QM2017...otherwise, QM2018 requires , macOS 10.11 El Capitan as a minimum, not 10.12 Sierra.

I suggest that you make sure that Quicken 2018 (or 2017) for Mac will meet your needs, since it is not an upgrade from QM2007 but rather from Quicken Essentials (which was re-written from the ground up, starting in 2010), so there are some features that are still not there e.g. full loan amortization*, 2-line display, QuickMath, or are not as fully developed yet, e.g. Customized Reports, performance reports and stats (therefore some data may not carry over). You can start here:
    https://www.quicken.com/mac/upgrader-compare

*NOTE: Support for fixed rate loans has been released as of  QM2017 v4.5.x but there is no announced timing for support for variable rate or simple daily interest loans.

Currently, the main advantages of QM2018 over QM2007 include the ability to sync cash, bank, and credit card accounts using Quicken Mobile for mobile devices (iOS and Android) and the ability to save receipts with transactions via computer or mobile device. There are a few other minor features that QM2007 does not have. Note that it has been announced that security fixes have ceased for QM2007 since QM2017 was released...see http://www.quicken.com/support/update-quicken-mac-2007-support-policies-may-2016 yet online access will continue as long as the FI/Bank supports it and their security updates don't prevent it.

Please note that QM2018 is now a subscription-based product currently available for 1 year directly from Quicken or 2 yrs from retailers (which are often cheaper than Quicken). (If you are able to find QM2017 which is a pre-subscription product, it is supported until April 2020).

Note that there are many differences that are rather subtle, that are not necessarily identifiable via documentation, for example, the 12-month budget feature does not allow including transfers, including investment income, selecting specific accounts, etc.

If you find that QM2018 does not meet your needs, the alternative is to obtain and run QM2007 Lion Compatible (LC), which will run on Mac OS X 10.6.8 to 10.13 High Sierra (so far*).

    * See Is Quicken for Mac 2007 (QM2007) Compatible with High Sierra (macOS 10.13)?
(Early reports suggest QM2007 works on High Sierra but automatic backups do not seem to work, at least when using the new APFS drive format... but is ok with the HFS+ (Mac OS Extended) format on the boot drive only, NOT on external drives)

I just found it and bought it on Ebay.  Best Buy had it.  I might be back here to ask about doing the upgrade as I have never done this.

Thank you for all these links. I just bought it on ebay from Best Buy and it doesn't say which version of 2017 on the box https://www.ebay.com/itm/Quicken-2017-Mac/202086297901?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p20...

I am now reading all your links after the fact. Thank you. I have a quick question which I am not clear about. Please note I only use Quicken to enter the data for checking, credit card and some money market accounts. And when I enter I use both the category and class features. And then at the end of the year for tax purposes I print out the Category detail report.   I was a bit confused by something I read here - will I still be able to print that out?

Yes...maybe...it depends on your needs. Reporting in the newest QMac is still VERY underdeveloped, so YMMV on the results.

First note that Classes have now been substituted with Tags. The differences are that you can now have multiple tags on a single transaction BUT there are no sub-tags like there are sub-classes (if you use that feature in QM2007; if you do not, then no major change for you).

You will have to experiment with the reports to see if they meet your needs...for some, they do, for others like myself, they still fall very short...

One simple example is that it is not possible to list both transactions that have a specific selection of tags AND transactions that do not have tags on the same report...it is either/or. Same is true of categories and Payees, though these last 2 are less likely to be an issue for most users.

Another is that there is no columnar report format, referred to as Job/Project in QM2007, where you can list categories vs tags on the same report (e.g. categories down the left side and tags across the top), or other variation that this report format can handle (tags vs dates, etc).

Then there are report formatting features that are still lacking, like subtotals, and totals show up at the top of a report, not the bottom, as is most traditional in the accounting world (a real pet peeve for many, including accountants), setting column widths, and so much more.

Hopefully, as you go through the links above, you will see the gaps and see if any of them apply to you.

Remember that you have a 60-day money back guarantee with QM2017, so if you are unsatisfied, you can get your money back via Quicken.
