WAIT A MINUTE!!!  Was it a report that became a PDF, or your backup file.
Your title and your message body contradict each other.
And while I do suppose that you could write your data file to PDF ... such wouldn't be usable by Quicken, which would need a .QDF-Backup data file.
A PDF file can only be read by a PDF Reader or Writer. Do you have one of those?

Alt + S or the icon is used to save a report.
Alt + E or the icon may be used to export a report to a PDF file.
Alt + P, Ctrl + P, or the icon may be used to print a report to PDF file.

I suspect you pressed the wrong key or clicked on the wrong icon.

Unless you preserved the report's history (Alt + H or the icon), I suggest you recreate the report.

The backup and original went PDF . . .and a whole bunch of others back to 2012 also were suddenly PDF and I hadn't touched those old files in years.

    Where are you seeing this?

Windows File Explorer has the ability to display or not display file extensions.  Secondly, files can be associated to various programs.  File Explorer will display based on those associations.

I am suspicious that you somehow got the QDF file extension associated with Adobe Acrobat Reader (or similar). That would lead you astray and could cause problems.
