I have quicken 2007 on a windows 7 laptop. I have quicken 2017 to install on new windows 10 laptop. Can I upgrade quicken 2007 data to 2017 once it is installed on windows 10 laptop? Will quicken 2017 install update quicken 2007 on my windows 7 laptop? All I want is the checkbook feature.

Yes Quicken 2017 can read/convert Quicken 2007 data.
When you runt the install for Quicken 2017 on the machine it will uninstall Quicken 2007, and install Quicken 2017.  When you run Quicken 2017 you will first need to create a Quicken Id and log in with it.  From there it should open your Quicken 2007 data file and convert it to the Quicken 2017 data format.

I would just copy your data file to the new machine and install Quicken 2017 and then open it when you get to that point.  No sense taking any chance with messing up the old Quicken 2007 setup if you don't have to.

In my opinion using Quicken 2013 as an intermediate conversion isn't needed.  It was added because of a early bug in Quicken 2014, that was fixed by a patch, but Quicken Inc has just left the Quicken 2013 version up there (and the same instructions) "to be safe".  Which BTW results in Quicken 2013 Deluxe being free for anyone to use now.

Thanks everyone for the help. The installation on my new laptop will be fresh. I assume I can copy my 2007 data to the proper folder on the new laptop and it will update when the program starts? Or should I install 2017 over 2007 on my old laptop then copy the data over to the new machine? Thanks.

P.S. Make sure you copy all the files that make up that data set or you can also just use backup and restore.

Since Quicken 2017 is still supported until the end of the month the latest patch should install automatically.  You can also download it from here, and it would be a good idea to save it in case you have to reinstall in the future:

BTW, the "proper folder" for Quicken data files is
    C:\Users\_username_\Documents\Quicken
This folder should NOT be subject to backup processing by MS OneDrive, Dropbox or other cloud backup software. Let Quicken create backups every time you exit Quicken and let cloud backup software send the backup file(s) to the cloud.

ps..........If your Quicken was before 2010 you should have several files making up the data.  The main data file ends in .QDF.  All Quicken versions prior to QW2010 store your data in a series of files all sharing the same filename but with different extensions like  - .QDF .IDX, .QEL, .QPH  and all 4 of those files were rolled into a single-file .QDF starting in 2010.

I'm staying on Quicken 2013 Premier for Windows.

So installing 2017, upon finding 2007 data, will update the 4 data files into 1 file?

Yes.  But you should read this article closely.  You may need to convert through another version on your way to 2017.

Yeah, that article says you HAVE to use 2013 to convert from 2004-2009.  If you are going to stay on Q2017 and not upgrade at the end of this month (April 2020) and you are not interested in downloading transactions or any online services I would stay on the free Q2013.  Starting in 2014 they instituted an ID password to get into your own data. I’m staying on 2013.

Well I think I should stay with 2013 as well. All I want to do is run my checking register. I do bill pay at Schwab Bank checking.

Thank you all for the help.

Is there any benefit to using 2017?

Entirely subjective.  2017 will have 4 years of further development, fixes, and bugs which may or may not impact your usage.

If you remain at 2013, I suggest you download and apply the Quicken 2013 Release R12 Mondo patch: http://www.quicknperlwiz.com/quickenpatches.html

Sherlock, I do not see a patch in the link you provided.

OK, I found the list of patches by scrolling to the bottom. Do I only need the last one?

You should only need to download and apply the Quicken 2013 Release R12 Mondo patch.
