How to reinstall Quicken after expiration

My Quicken expired Nov 2019. I'm trying to reinstall it on a new computer, but cannot seem to get the right version to work. How do I do that? Their webpage seemed to indicate downloading 18.16.exe, but that didn't work. I know the last version that worked on my previous computer was R30.21build 27.1.30.21.

Can I just copy the Quicken.exe from the old computer to the new computer?

To install Quicken on the new computer, I suggest you download and open: https://download.quicken.com/windows/Quicken.exe

I went ahead and tried copying the the whole Program Files\Quicken folder to the new computer overwriting the newer version and it worked. Thanks for your quick response.

For what it is worth it seems that somewhere along the lines they have started blocking installing patches when the subscription expires.

So whatever version the original install is, is what you get.  Copying the programs file might be a way to get back to the version you had, but it has some risks without copying all the config files, and maybe even some things in the register.

But as it turns out the link the provide (the one @Sherlock referenced) does install the latest version without download patches (I tried it with my network connection down).
That might change at any time so I suggest getting a copy of that install.

I tried using my original install files, but Quicken auto upgraded it.

Are you saying that if I used that version, I would have to turn off network every time I used it?

No.  That was just for the testing.  Quicken usually updates to the latest version after installing.  Given that the expired license might not update to the latest version I wanted to see what version the provide install/link actually installs.  By turning off my network I could prove that I didn't get a later version after the install through the network.  I installed with my network disconnected and got R31.8, which is the latest version.

Thanks for your help. I don’t see a way to get back to the version I’m supposed to have except copying the program files like I did.

Yes that seems to be the case.  About the only thing you can do is what you did or just use the full install and get the latest version.

If you want to get revert to version R30.21. I suggest you perform a clean uninstall, install while disconnected from the internet using a version of the Quicken installation program saved prior to the staged release of R31, update to R30.21, and restore the Quicken files saved prior to upgrading to R31.  If you haven’t already, you may want to review: https://www.quicken.com/support/using-qcleanui-uninstall-quicken  To update Quicken to R30.21, I recommend you download and apply the Quicken Subscription R30.21 Mondo Patch available at: http://www.quicknperlwiz.com/quickenpatches.html

To prevent Quicken from applying an update without your approval, I suggest you set Windows UAC settings appropriately (choose default or always notify).

@Sherlock just so you know it has been reported that if a person has an expired subscription the patches refuse to do anything.

  • I am hitting the same issue as OP. I allowed my subscription to expire. The next time I launched quicken it auto-updated and now I am unable to access my data.

I have the backup of the pre-upgraded data.

I have tried uninstalling quicken & installing the file named "R18.6" in the referenced page above, but that does not work for me. Nothing happens.

I tried installing the "Quicken.exe" also referenced earlier -- the version installed was created after my expiration and I am not allowed to use it.

How do I download and install a version of quicken I can use?

    Thanks!

The only thing that has worked for me is to copy the complete Quicken directories from the Program Files directory after installing Quicken which overwrites the latest version (which doesn’t work) with the last version that worked for me.

Sounds like Quicken Inc has recently created a loop that you can't get out of.
I get it that they don't want people with expired licenses to go beyond the version where the subscription expired, but without the "exact older" install program or being able to use the patch installs to "downgrade" they have created a situation where their promise to allow people to keep using Quicken even after an expired subscription is now being violated.

@Chris_QPW That would not be consistent with my experience and understanding which is the status of a subscription only impacts the rights applied to the Quicken files associated with the Quicken ID.

From what I understand this is a very recent change.  And I tried the other day when it came to light, and got the similar results.

I just tried it again and I'm seeing something new even the last few days even though I install nothing (I guess it was done with a "data patch").

I'm going to work through this "link" and see where it leads.

OK they have "closed the loop".  They are providing the installs for the older versions in that article.

But, I tried that first and it wouldn’t install. Also, I have a legal later version since my subscription didn’t expire until November 2019. My version is R30.21.

The only difficulty you should have is locating an earlier version of the installation program.  (Unfortunately, @Chris_CPW has not been preserving the installation programs only the patches.)

  • My versionw is quicken premiere.

When I download the latest version availabe at the link below, it does nothing. The name of the file downloaded is R18.16, released in April 2019. My subscription expired in Jan, 2021 -- about a week ago.

I have Quicken Deluxe and none of that works. I even have my original install disks, but the first thing that happens during installation is that Quicken updates to the current version and then says I cannot use it since I expired in Nov 2019.

I happen to have saved the installation program for R30.9:

and applied the R30.21 mondo patch from: http://www.quicknperlwiz.com/quickenpatches.html

My question is may I provide the installation program?

Only Quicken Inc can answer that.  And I bet they won't even answer.

I want to also state that I have tried this and the "system is broken".

First off the web page is referencing the same patches that I have saved on my site:
    http://www.quicknperlwiz.com/quicken-subscription-patches.html

And I might add the in the website R15.15 is referencing a bad patch that was replaced.  It is a 1.4 GB patch that when it was re-released is a 216MB patch.  The bad one will fail to install claiming that there isn't enough space on the disk.  The correct patch is named QW27.1.15.15M2Patch.EXE

At any rate based on the date of the expired license I was using to test this I should be able to use R15.16, but no matter what version patch I try I get this error:

Note that I tried the install from my account and the one in the link provide and they both push up to R31.8 and give the error reported above that sent me down this path.

If you haven't already, I suggest you contact Quicken Support to inform them of the issue. If Quicken is going down this path, they should be maintaining the installation programs and the updates:  https://www.quicken.com/support/quicken-support-options

Note: As the details on the linked page have not been updated in over a year, it's possible the change in the staged release was not intended.

So, I just chatted with Customer Service
    Agent
unfortunately, we are very restricted on the options when it comes to an unsupported version. I personally recommend the method you are using (even though it is not very easy and practical) to install Quicken on another computer too

    Me
I’ve done that, but your support site has instructions on how to do this, but none of what you suggest there works. Are you trying to force me to pay extra for the subscription service by locking me out of the version I’ve paid for?

    Agent
I’m sorry, it is not that, it is just that we are unable to provide support for subscriptions that are not active. If the instructions on the support site are not working for you, I’m afraid that the only option will be to renew your subscription, and update your Quicken software, so we can troubleshoot any problem (if necessary)

    Me
Not helpful at all for you to have instructions on how to fix something that does not work. I paid for this version and you’ve effectively broken it.

    Agent
I can understand your frustration and I wish I had another alternative for you, unfortunately we are unable to troubleshoot unsupported versions of Quicken. You can confirm this here: https://www.quicken.com/support/quicken-discontinuation-policy

Agent finally said to reinstall from old installation files with Internet off and then delay any attempt by Quicken to update when I do reconnect.

Has anyone tried applying the R30.21 Mondo Patch over the R31 install as a way of rolling back?  It's not an approach I would generally suggest be used when reverting to an earlier release but if it works...
