Has anyone experienced an IE6 install error when trying to install Quicken subscription?

I am a subscriber to Quicken online. I was having a problem with One Step update - error message that Quicken server was down (untrue). Every other feature I used was working fine. After trying several other "fixes" with no success I contacted Quicken support. The recommendation was to make sure Windows was up to date. I typically delay updates to make sure no new bugs are reported, but in this case I installed the March update. This did not solve my Quicken problem. Support then suggested I had a conflict with another program but they could not identify which program. Apparently no database is kept of programs that conflict with Quicken. Support's suggestion was I uninstall programs until I found the culprit. I was reluctant to take on this task, first because One Step update had been working fine up until now a few weeks ago and I had not installed any new programs and second Support seemed to be grasping at straws.

In any event I thought I would first try reinstalling Quicken. I am running 64 bit WIN10 Pro on a Dell desktop with an Intel i7-7700 CPU at 3.60 GHz. The install routine first uninstalls any existing version of Quicken and then begins the new install routine. That routine first attempts to install Internet Explorer version 6.0!!! In my case the installation stopped with a message that the Quicken install requires IE6 and an error occurred installing IE6. No further message or error code was given. Unfortunately the install proceeded far enough to uninstall the subscription version of Quicken that was working fine in all respects except for the One Step update function. No data was lost but I have been forced to reinstall an older standalone version of Quicken. The standalone version is very quirky and cannot be updated. I would like to get back to the subscription version.

Does anyone know why the Quicken install requires the extremely out of date IE6 in order to install? I attempted to manually install the older version IE6 and received the error message that IE6 could not be installed on a 64 bit operating system. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can get around this problem. Does the Quicken install search the registry to see if IE6 is installed or merely search to see if an IE6 .exe file or .dll file exists or is there actually some role IE6 plays in the Quicken install sequence? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What version of Quicken are you trying to install and where did you get the installation media?  Did you download the installation file from https://download.quicken.com/windows/Quicken.exe?

Perhaps the installation of it did not complete properly.  Have you tried to uninstall and reinstall it? (How do I download Quicken from Quicken.com to install or reinstall it?).

    Hi @""Mike Cetera" ,

You don't need to have Quicken installed, in order to Quicken Installer from your Account!

If you don 't use Internet Explorer, remove it from your Windows computer from
Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Programs and Features
On the Left Side click Turn Windows Features on or off.
Uncheck Internet Explorer if you see it.

Thank you for your response. I had already tried most of the procedures identified in the Quicken Community link you provided. I did uncheck the Windows' Internet Feature (Version 11). As I mentioned in my original post I have installed an older standalone version of Quicken as a temporary fix. I tried once more to install my subscription version of Quicken. The same failure has again occurred. As a possible clue for you and others as to what is happening I have taken the install log, redacted the user name and show it here:

Please note that the install log shows an attempt to install IE6, which then fails. I have two comments:

    1. The log shows that IE5 is installed on my machine. The list of installed programs from the "Programs and Features" window does not show any installed Internet Explorer. A search of the registry shows a number of entries for IE5. However, I am not experienced enough to try to delete IE5 by manually editing the registry.
    2. After finding IE5 installed the log notes that IE6 is needed to install Quicken and then attempts to install IE6. This install fails and the Quicken install process is subsequently aborted. I tried to manually install IE6 but received an error message that IE6 cannot be installed under a 64 bit operating system.

A thought occurred to me as I was drafting this response. I was wondering if the Quicken install routine specifically requires IE6 or if it would accept a later version that is compatible with a 64 bit operating system. Although I do not use Internet Explorer I will be installing the latest version and then re-attempting the Quicken install. In the meantime if you or others have any further comments as to how I can get around this roadblock I would appreciate your help.

I looked at my install.log from when I installed Quicken Subscription and it looks nothing like yours. Are you sure you're not installing an old version? I would download QCleanUI and a new version of the installer and try again.

Even if you don't use Internet Explorer at all, I recommend that you install an appropriate version of IE for your Windows 10 system, to get out of the catch-22 with the Quicken installer not finding a good IE version.

Thank you for your continued interest in my problem. I secured the install routine directly from my Quicken account for my version of the Quicken subscription. I found it strange that the install routine requires IE6 and questioned a Quicken support tech regarding the requirement. He advised me that IE6 was not required for the Quicken install. My next question for which he had no answer was why then was IE6 install attempt included in the Quicken install .exe

The log file above seems to be from when you have IE 6 installed, at least it is nothing like the install log file I have with IE 11 checked (note I even tried it without it installed, and had no problems.  I didn't try to install IE 6 and frankly I wouldn't recommend that.  IE is very "low level" and might mess up things).

Anyways look at the start of my log file:

Note it is "MSI".  Yours seems to be an older install program for some reason.

I secured the install download (Quicken.exe) from my Quicken account. I assumed (mistakenly?) that I was downloading the latest install version. Is there another source for a better install routine. No matter what I seem to do the Quicken.exe install fails when it tries to first install IE6.

OK looking at all the files in the installer log directory I see that the "setup.htm" file looks "like" your log file.  The real/full log file is Install.log.  That is what I was looking at.

One thing I notice is that your log file calls out that you have Quicken 2016 installed.
It might in fact be the "uninstall" that is messing up.  Not the install.

Have you gone through the full QcleanUI procedure to get you a clean install?
You would want to do the second section of this document.

If that doesn't get it then I would recommend using the procedure that @thecreator posts:

I looked at your log and it seemed to answer one of my questions. It seems the Quicken install does not need IE6 but rather any Internet Explorer version 6 or later. Your log shows a search for IE6 but no attempt to install IE6 because Internet Explorer version 9 was found. For some reason my registry contains orphans of installed IE5 which the Quicken install sees and demands IE6 be installed thus causing the failure. Does anyone know how to clean all references to IE5 from the registry? IE5 does not appear in the program list.

I manually remove the remnants of IE5 from the registry and installed IE11, which does open. My Quicken.exe install routine log does not now show any installed Internet explorer and the routine still tries to install IE6 and fails.

I regularly use CCleaner, which did not remove the remnants of IE5 but I did manually edit the registry to remove the remnants of IE5 and then installed IE11, which does open. See my post right above this post. I need a Quicken install routine that does not try to install IE6.

Boy that is tough one.  Clearly something really hidden your Windows registry is "different" that is causing it to believe IE isn't right/installed.  I have no idea what that can be.  It might even be needed to reinstall Windows.

    Hi @""Mike Cetera" ,

A Shortcut, as oppose to a full blown Windows reinstall, that is reformat and reinstall, would be to create a New Windows User Account as the Administrator of the computer.

Open Settings and click on Accounts.
    Click Family & other users.
Under Other users, click Add someone else to this PC.
Click I don't have this person's sign in information.
Click a user without a Microsoft Account.
Name the User. (Password is not needed).
Locate the Name under Add someone else to this PC.
Click on the Name of the User.
    Click Change account type.
Switch from Standard User to Administrator. and Click OK.
Now Right click on Start and click Shut Down or Sign Out.
    Click Sign Out.
    Click on the New User.
This will set up the New User/

Now you might want to create a New Folder outside of your Account, so the New User can access the Files.
If Quicken can be installed using the New Windows Account, I submit your current Windows Account is corrupt.

To all who have generously taken the time to respond to my issue:

I was able to install the subscription Quicken on a laptop running the same operating system as my desktop, which told me it wasn't the Quicken install .exe that was the problem. I had not encountered any problems with other software on my desktop until I tried to use a shortcut to open a previously installed version of TurboTax 2020 to finalize and file my return. For no reason I could discern, Windows started to attempt a reinstall of TurboTax and then failed because "the install needed IE5 whose install then failed." I could double click on the previously saved draft tax file and TurboTax opened without any problem. Two issues of install procedures requiring IE5 to complete the install struct me as very suspicious. My conclusion was that my operating system had been corrupted in some way and the error message was some lazy programmer's way of handling an error but not taking the time to deliver a meaningful error message. In any event I re-installed the 64 bit Win10 Pro operating system in a way as to not lose any data or settings and subsequently installed the subscription Quicken without any problem. (My TurboTax shortcut also now works fine.) Thank you all for your interest and comments.
