:/ I have a Credit Union checking acct in Quicken. I just started my subscription with Quicken. The issue i am having is that I have 4 transactions that were refunds from retail stores that were credited back to my checking account. When Quicken synced these transactions they showed up as debits. How do I fix that?

When I try to correct them and sync and close quicken i get error messages for those transactions that states illegal operation: {0}

    Hello @Mangelo

Thank you for contacting the Quicken Community, though I do apologize that you are experiencing this issue.

First, I suggest creating a test file and adding the Credit Union account(s) to see how the refunded transactions download and if they produce the same error message. It is recommended to save a backup before proceeding with troubleshooting steps in the event that you would like to return to your original starting position. Below are instructions on how to create a test file:
    1. Choose File menu > New Quicken File.

Advanced Data File Troubleshooting to Correct Problems With Quicken for Windows

    1. Select New Quicken File.

    1. Click OK.
    2. In the File name field, enter the name of the new file, then click Save. Use a name like "Test File" to tell it apart from your main file.

Don't use any of these characters: * ? < > | " : \ / (asterisk, question mark, left and right-angle bracket, pipe, straight quotation marks, colon, BACKSLASH, FORWARD SLASH). Also, don't add the .qdf extension; Quicken does that for you.

    1. Sign in with your Quicken ID. If you are prompted to create a Quicken ID but already have one, click Sign In under the Create Account prompt.

Advanced Data File Troubleshooting to Correct Problems With Quicken for Windows

    1. Select to not use Mobile.
    2. Click Add Account to start adding accounts to the new file.

After adding accounts, see if you are experiencing the same problems in this test file.

Please let me know how this goes, I look forward to hearing your response.

let's back up a little. I did create a new file but I did not add any transactions manually. I just added my bank account and synced. The highlighted transactions were returns to the store that show up as if they were purchases. You can imagine the mess this creates when i reconcile.

    Hello @Mangelo

Thank you for responding and for attempting the test file.

From what I understand, the refunds also came in as charges within the test file as well? If that is the case then you will need to reach out to your Financial Institution as there is an issue with the way they are sending the data to Quicken. We do advise requesting to speak to a Tier 2 Agent or a Supervisor as they tend to generally be more familiar with third-party applications such as Quicken.

I do apologize that I could not be of more assistance.

And, while we're waiting for the bank to fix their downloads, to fix the already incorrectly downloaded register transactions, just change the amount to a negative amount so that it moves itself from the Charge to the Deposit column (or blank out the amount in Charge and reenter it in Deposit).
