Quicken only offers 90 days of bank download. I need something that will download the entire year. Any answers for me?

Possibly. How far back in time a download that's initiated from within Q can go is determined by your bank … not by Q.

SOME banks, if you initiate the download from their website (i.e., a "Web Connect) will allow you to specify other timeframes, which sometimes (some banks) can include an entire year or longer.

BE CAREFUL when doing such downloads if there are any other transactions in the account that you're downloading to, as you can easily end up with duplicate transactions. If your bank allows you to select the download period, I'd suggest NOT downloading all at once (maybe month by month or 2 months) and reconciling after each download and then backing up after each reconcile … just to be safe.

What format did you use to download these transactions?
The easiest to import into Quicken would be the QFX (Quicken compatible) format.
You should be able to import into Quicken by either double-clicking the downloaded .QFX file or by selecting File Menu / File Import / Web Connect QFX file

If your destination bank account is already connected online for regular transaction downloading allow the import process to create a new temporary account register. When done, block-select all required transactions (excluding the Opening Balance transaction) and Move the selected transactions from the temporary account to the desired account register.

Whatever you do, please be sure to create a backup of your Quicken data file before you start working on this. If something were to go horribly wrong, you can restore the backup file and start over.

@Randy822 There are MULTIPLE "Arvest Bank" entries, in AR alone, that support download into Q via Web Connect … where you initiate the download in Q data format from the bank's website.

SO, do TOOLS, Account List and click EDIT adjacent to your Arvest Bank account and make sure that you've got the correct Arvest selected and enable it for download "Arvest Bank - Web Connect" might work also.

BTW, while your at the website to initiate the download, see if they'll let you select the period of the download as discussed above.

I'm thinking that you're wasting your time entering transaction detail on the bank's website … especially if this information is not part of the transaction download process.

I'd rather you spend your time recording check transaction detail directly into your Quicken data file at the time you write a paper check. This way the information already is in Quicken at the time the check clears the bank a few days later and the download process only has to match the downloaded check # to what's already in your checking account register.

I thought I saw a site that would go 12 months on Quicken. I have already downloaded all transactions from my bank on my computer. How can I transfer that to my Quicken?

@randy822 You also might try Googling "PDF to QIF". I haven't tried any of them … but there appear to be multiple options available

Which bank? Maybe someone around here will know how to get the older transactions in a file you can import.

My bank did have a way to download into Quicken! What I don't like is that it fails to detail who my checks were written to!

  • NotACPA
NotACPA Quicken Windows Subscription SuperUser ✭✭✭✭✭

That's because, for checks and other paper documents, the bank only knows what's on the MICR line of the check and when the bank processed the document. Your bank doesn't know the date you wrote the check either.

To keep track of the payees, you need to either input the Check when you first write it, or Edit the downloaded transaction.

I most likely will need to print out all my transactions and manually file my taxes darnit. When I look at my Quicken bank statement is shows it is in the red and that is not accurate! So does Profit and Loss!

When you say "Quicken bank statement" is that a report produced by Q? Or the printed statement from your bank?

Have you done the downloads that we previously discussed? Have you done those account reconciliations? Because a relatively small amount of time that would be needed to do those should eliminate a LOT of time to do the manual collection/summation of data that you're describing.

I downloaded to Quicken but it does not show who the checks written to. When I used PDF it shows everything. Also the downloaded statement on Quicken shows a negative balance but that is incorrect!

  • NotACPA

It can't POSSIBLY show who the checks are written to … the info isn't on the MICR line and it's not part of the download specs.

And, how can a downloaded statement, created by the bank, & presumably a PDF, be incorrect unless the info at the bank in incorrect in which you've got a MUCH bigger problem

Every thing I need came out in PDF as in who the checks were written to and what they were as in materials or sub contractors. I go to my bank account every day and it is always correct. Something is wrong with Quicken.

  • NotACPA
NotACPA Quicken Windows Subscription SuperUser ✭✭✭✭✭

Again, the Payee isn't part of the download specs. Q can't possibly know that info unless you input it.

And, it sounds like your bank is using an IBM 3895 to scan the checks. A 3895, unlike it's still mostly used 3890 predecessor DOES have optical scan capability with is probably how your bank is getting the info on the statements. But since that info is, once again, not part of the download specs, your bank has no way of conveying it to Q.

Nothing wrong with Q … just with your expectations.

And where did the bank get this information from? Are you manually adding transaction detail on the bank's website?

The information available to Quicken depends on what Intuit's screen scrape procedure is capable of reading from the bank's Transaction Detail website and follows the OFX/QFX protocol's standard data fields: date, check #, payee name, memo, amount. Optional additional fields are not included in the download.

For a paper check processed thru the ACH banking system, there is no payee name. Only a check number.
The exception to this rule is if the payee (biller, vendor) converted the paper check into an ACH Debit transaction. In this case, a payee name would be available in the downloaded transaction but the actual paper check's number may be lost.

But if the check is being converted to an ACH transaction … that's a different beast than being a "check". ACH transactions have Payees, check transactions (as downloaded) don't.

If the reference is to downloaded PDF statements then, yes, they can show who the checks are written to. It's just that the payees will not be displayed as text but instead will be displayed as scanned pictures of the checks.

A few years ago I had Quick Books and did not have any problems with it.

QuickBooks is an Intuit product that is a full-featured accounting software for businesses.

Quicken was also originally developed by Intuit but as a personal financial planning software, not a true full-featured accounting software. It and QuickBooks were and still are totally separate softwares that are incompatible with each other. Also, in 2016 Intuit sold Quicken which is now a standalone company owned by Aquiline Capital Partners.

An IBM 3895, with its Optical scan feature, CAN read the payee line … but OCR capability (not in the 3895) would be needed to convert it into text. And the results will greatly depend upon the handwriting legibility of the check writer. My handwriting is atrocious, and would never be interpreted accurately.

IF it's a graphic of the check that's being discussed, then the Microfilm feature of either IBM device can provide that … but as @Boatnmaniac suggests that isn't usable data. And to expect that payee info to be passed to Q simply isn't reasonable. although some banks allow the graphic image to be downloaded.
