Quickfill rule not working (Q Mac)

Member ✭✭

I am trying to use the Payees & Rules functionality to automate things more but have an issue. I have a vendor called MUD. The transaction comes in as MUD GAS UTIL MUDACH ~ Tran: ACHDW so I set up a renaming rule to change it to MUD. That worked. Then I have a quick fill rule for the vendor MUD to put in the category and tags. That didn't work. In checking other posts it seems this has been a problem for a few years. Is it not resolved yet? If quick fill only works via manual entry then what's the point? Or does the quick fill rule need to be based on the original vendor from the download? I would think Quicken should apply the rename, then apply the quickfill based on the new vendor. Am I missing something? Thanks!

    Hello @Demoleon,

    Thanks for reaching out!

To help us pinpoint what’s going wrong, can you confirm whether the QuickFill rule you're using is set to auto-apply (with the lock icon enabled)? Also, is the rule tied specifically to the payee name “MUD,” or is it possibly still referencing the original downloaded name? Understanding whether the QuickFill rule is tied to the renamed or original version will help determine if the sequence of rule application is where things are breaking down.

    Let me know!

Yes, the lock icon is enabled. On the Payees tab I only have one vendor for MUD and it shows 1 renaming rule and 1 quickfill. No other vendors or renaming rules or quickfill rule have MUD as the vendor or contain MUD.

    Hello @Demoleon,

Thanks again for the detailed follow-up. sounds like everything is set up correctly on the surface, so let’s walk through a few things that might help reset or troubleshoot the QuickFill behavior in the current version of Quicken for Mac:

    1. Delete and recreate the QuickFill rule for "MUD":
Go to Window > Payees & Rules, select the "MUD" payee, and remove the existing QuickFill rule. Then, create a new transaction with your preferred category/tags and re-save that setup as a new locked QuickFill rule. Sometimes, a fresh rule clears up issues.
    2. Try a manual test entry:
Enter a transaction manually using "MUD" as the payee to confirm if the QuickFill rule is triggering outside of downloaded transactions. If it works manually but not for downloaded ones, it’s likely something with how the rule is applying during import.
    3. Check if “Automatically apply QuickFill rules” is enabled:
Head to Quicken > Settings > Register, and make sure “Automatically apply QuickFill rules” is checked. This is required for rules to apply without manual intervention.
    4. Review the raw downloaded payee:
In the register, click on a transaction and press Command + Option + E to show the full transaction edit window. This will show both the “Payee” and the “Downloaded Payee” fields—make sure the rule is set up to apply to the renamed version ("MUD"), not the original string.

Let me know if any of these suggestions help!

@Quicken Jasmine This is new to me, and I don't see such a checkbox on the Settings > Register screen. Is this possibly something from Quicken Windows you mistakenly posted here? If not, can you show a screenshot of this option, because I just don't see it in Quicken Mac settings.

I don't see it either. I see "Automatically Create…" but not apply. Is it somewhere else on the Mac version?

I don't believe so. Hopefully she will clarify.

    Hello @Demoleon and @jacobs,

My apologies for the confusion. The wording in my original response was a bit off. If you navigate to Quicken > Settings > Register. You should see "Automatically create rule when I edit a transaction" (see screenshot). You can also find these instructions within this Support Article (I have already submitted a FAQ request, as it does still mention "preferences" rather than "settings".

I hope this clears things up!

I have QuickFill set to automatically apply when I edit a transaction but that says nothing about downloaded transactions. This morning I downloaded some transactions and like before the renaming rule applied but not the QuickFill. I had to do that by hand. So it appears that Quicken MAC is crippled and I am paying an annual fee to have to do extra work? What am I missing? Seems so simple to apply the renaming rule and then apply the QuickFill for downloaded transactions.

Update: since QuickFill isn't working for downloaded transactions I set up some of my monthly charges as scheduled transactions. This morning the transaction for my wireless bill was downloaded and it did not match it to the scheduled transaction. It set up a separate transaction with the renaming rule applied but not the QuickFill of course. Even though the amount, the date the vendor were all identical. Does NOTHING in Quicken Mac work to save us time and automate processes?
