Early Access: Report Customization: issues with sub-categories

edited April 12 in Reports (Windows)

In the Early Access version of Report Customization, when I go to select categories. the new version ignore the parent category (does not allow it to select and de-select sub-categories) and duplicates sub-categories in the display.

Please see attached pictures from the Old Version and New Version

Quicken Windows R62.16

This happens to be in the Itemized Categories Report but I've seen it in others I have sampled … and in more than one data file.

The red arrow on my screenshot of the new (early release) version points at a parent category. The sub-categories are not indented under the parent … and checking and unchecking the parent category does not affect the sub-categories below.

The green arrows show duplicated sub-categories.

Please compare with the screenshot of the Old interface, which looks and works as expected … subcategories are properly indented, are not duplicated, and are checked and unchecked along with the parent categories, as desired.

Can you show us an image snapshot of Tools / Category List scrolled to the Personal:Vacation category and all its subcategories, please? In the snapshot show all columns of the view including column titles and ensure the list is sorted by Category.

Perhaps this will show us what's causing this …
    Thank you.

This is not exactly related to your issue, but I think a better way to organize your vacation expenses would be to have Vacation as the main Category with Subcategories of Food, Lodging, Transportation, and Other.

Then use Tags for the various places you have gone. Tags can be used along with Categories to create detailed reports without having to set up a complex structure of Categories or new Categories for each trip or destination.

Thanks, Jim. That's an interesting idea and I sure appreciate it.

I've been using Quicken since the mid-1990's and have never tried tags. Might need to add that to my bag of tricks!

    Thanks again,

    John

Reviewing the Category List, I notice that you have omitted the columns Group (Category Group) and Type (Income, Expense or Transfer).
Please add these columns to the Category List, for future reference, using the gear icon in the upper right of the list.

Are all categories under Personal associated with the same Category Group, e.g., "Personal Expense", and the same Type (Expense)?
ISTR problems with subcategories using either mixed Income or Expense types or different Category Groups.
If you need to change Category Groups of individual categories please use the functions available under the Options button.

Sorry, I guess I've had those two columns turned off for so many years I forgot they exist. An updated screen shot is below.

Okay, I did an experiment with a brand new database. The problem seems to be that the Early Access Customize Reports dialog has problems handling sub-sub categories in the Category filter tab.

    Entertainment:Arts is okay
Entertainment:Arts:Modern is not handled properly (see duplicate display in first screenshot below)

See pictures below and then try it for yourself.

I see the same. Thanks for pointing this out. This adds to several other issues with the new interface.

Until Quicken gets around to fixing this, I suggest you use the old customization interface.

I have reported this via Help > Report a Problem.

Child catergories are not grouped to show under their parent.

for example, The other issue is the customize window size is fixed, no option to make the category windows bigger.

    Hello @ccc123,

    Thanks for reaching out!

To better understand what you're seeing with the category and sub-category grouping, can you let me know which specific report you're running when the child categories aren’t showing under their parent? Also, are you sorting the report by category or by something else, like date or amount?

As for the customization window, are you referring to the Customize Report > Categories tab?

    Let me know!

@Quicken Jasmine I think this is the same issue as discussed here

It affects all sub-subcategories when you use the new report customization interface.

The new interface should be fixed, but a workaround is to use the old interface.
