Quicken windows - How to Clean Up Old Accounts and Categories
I’ve been a longtime user of Quicken over 20 years. I’d like to clean it up. Start fresh. There are lots of accounts that I don’t use anymore lots of categories that can be forgotten some that need renaming etc. what’s the easiest way to do and when? I don’t want to screw up reports that I use for taxes at the end of the year.
thanks

Hello @donnaperch,
Great to hear you've been using Quicken for over 20 years—it's smart to consider a cleanup! To help point you in the right direction without disrupting your reporting or tax prep, could you clarify a few things?
- Are you planning to continue using the same data file, or are you thinking of starting fresh with a new one while preserving your historical data for reference?
- Do you still need access to old account data for tax or reporting purposes, or are you comfortable with hiding/inactivating them?
- When you mention cleaning up categories:
- Are you looking to rename, merge, or delete them?
- Do you rely on category-based reports for year-end taxes?
- Do any of the old accounts still contain transactions that factor into current reports or balances (like loans, investments, or transfers)?
- Are there specific reports you run regularly that we should keep in mind while helping you plan a cleanup?
Once we have a bit more info, we can help you clean up your file efficiently without risking any important data or disrupting reports.
